Apply可以當及物動詞和不及物動詞使用，當及物動詞使用時，其後要加受詞，例如apply theory to practice (應用理論至實務)；而當不及物動詞使用時，其後則要加介系詞，最常用的介系詞片語就是apply to (應用於；適用於)和apply for (申請)。

另外要注意的是，當apply作及物動詞後接受詞時，如果再接to 加動詞的話，to後的動詞可以用原形(如下例1)，也可以用動名詞(如下例2):

1. Communicative competence includes the ability to apply these rules to use language appropriately.

     溝通能力包括應用這些規則以適當使用語言的能力。

2. The researcher applied mathematics to designing more efficient chip-manufacturing lines.

研究者應用數學理論來設計更有效率的晶片生產線。

   他們要求印度政府應用更嚴格的環保標準。 

Ø apply + Prep.

Apply to片語中的to是介系詞，在論文寫作中通常是後接名詞或名詞片語。例如:

1. They apply those previously learned strategies to a new learning situation.

    他們應用那些之前學得的策略到一個新的學習情境。 

但apply to如果後接動詞的話則要用動名詞，不要用原形動詞。例如:

1.      The same steps apply to reading tables of frequency comparisons such as those shown in Table 1.

      相同的步驟可應用於閱讀比較次數的表格，如表1所顯示。
