academic 常作形容詞「學術的」，後面搭配名詞，例如：

The objective assessment of the prestige of an academic institution is a difficult and hotly debated task.

對於學術機構聲譽的客觀評量，是困難和爭議很大的工作。

但academic也可當名詞使用，意思是「學者」，如「一位資深學者」可稱為 a senior academic，再如以下例句：

Some leading academics have given considerable thought to this program.

有些傑出的學者已對此計畫進行審慎思考。

此外，還有幾個相關字可以同時學習，名詞academia是指「學術界」，例如：

Perfectionism is the enemy of productivity in academia.

在學術界完美主義是學術生產力的大敵。

其它相關字如academy則是指「研究院」、「學會」或英美的「專科學校、軍警校等」，例如美國電影的奧斯卡金像獎（The Oscars）的正式名稱其實是　Academy Awards「美國影藝學院獎」。
