My thoughts after reading the news about the free cut in Puyan Township, Changhua

Reading the Taipei Times report on October 18, 2020, I learned that recently the elderly in Shipi Village(石埤村), Puyan Township(埔鹽鄉), Changhua County(彰化縣), had a very good haircut experience because of the township chief, Ms. Xu Wen-ping(許文萍鄉長), who contacted the Arden Group(雅頓集團) to provide free cut services.

According to reports, more than a quarter of the residents in Shipi Village, Puyan Township are elderly people, and a large number of young people have migrated. There is no barber shop in the area. If villagers want to have a haircut, they have to ride a motorcycle or bicycle to five kilometers, or they cut their own hair. This time, a charity-cutting event was held under the contact of the mayor. Many villagers came to participate happily., even a 102-year-old Grandpa also participated.

In addition, through the "Related News" on the website, I also read that in January this year, three self-employed hairdressers from the "Jibei Shua" tribe(吉貝耍部落) in Dongshan, Tainan(臺南東山) returned to serve their hometowns and helped the tribes (hometown) elders.

As the saying goes, "People want clothes," and most people want their clothes to look neat and upright. Although the elders are already older, there seems to be more "priorities" to take care of and consider compared with clothing and appearance, such as physical health, children and grandchildrens career and family happiness, financial planning, etc. But seeing the smiles displayed by them participating in the "free cut", we know that in fact, grandpa and grandma also hope to maintain a good-looking appearance.

So, for such a remote village, in addition to the occasional "free cut" service, is it possible for a professional barber to provide a "tour" haircut service to match supply and demand? We know that some rural schools have so-called "touring" teachers, that is, the same teacher turns to each school to provide teaching or support, but this is a work contract arranged by the school.

In recent years, many "hundred dollar barber" shops have opened, and there are also vocational training courses specifically for "hair cutting". I personally believe that the training of professional skills can not be achieved in a short period of time, and advanced haircutting skills need to be cultivated over the years. But if it is only the haircut needs of the elderly in rural areas, I wonder if it is possible to train relevant talents for one year, so that they have the ability to travel to the rural areas for haircuts on their own?

Furthermore, there have been many discussions on the Internet about "remote office" and "mobile office". The future workplace (work) trend is likely to be that there is no fixed office space. Now, it is obvious that there are also many workers who do not have a fixed office, such as delivery attendants, or remote engineers of technology companies. In my opinion, hairdressing services can also be "non-fixed storefronts," but that requires extraordinary service spirit to achieve.

In terms of the entire market, if the providers of hairdressing services are already close to saturation, it may be very hard for young people to break into the hairdressing industry and open new shops. Is it a way of traveling, taking the initiative to provide fixed-point services in remote villages, or even to your home? Could it be a business opportunity for young barbers?

I dont know, its just a little idea. In addition, in this news, there is obviously the topic of "an aging population in rural areas" that can be discussed.
