Jam
Jazz comes to Bangkok
November 1996
Jazz spreads through the night
Black jam over hardened crust
Of ten million awakening ears
Which perk to the perfections of his voice
Screaming tenor sixteenths into silent city gasps
Pleading through melody for us to listen
A black blanket from a tired fighter
Exorcising his peoples pain
Through a silver-tongued sax rifling the air
Embracing us children of his music
We set down our arms, forget our wars,
And listen through cringing eyes to discern his deftness
On the sword that plunges into his lungs
Which breathe the sounds that hypnotize
Twelve billion eyes with sacred ideas stare:
Without music, there‘d be nothing left of the world but noise
