FYI Updated reference about editions of “ A la recherche du temps perdu ” . Please find the book “Proust’s way http://www.books.com.tw/exep/prod/booksfile.php?item=F010135870 ” by Roger Shattuck, there is a detailed description on the said issue from p.177 to p.192. The author, Roger Shattuck, mentioned “ When Proust’s novel fell into public domain in 1987, three Paris publishing houses were ready with new editions that had been in preparation for several years….” Three publishing houses are Laffont Bouquins 、 Garnier-Flammarion and Gallimard. “ The difference is immediately visible and palpable. The Pléiade edition of A la recherche du temps perdu grew from three compact leather-bound volumes totaling 3,500 pages to four bulging volumes totaling 7,300 pages. The added pages include expanded apparatus and, most prominently, newly introduced sketches, drafts, and variants in tiny print….Nevertheless, Proust scholars working with the original French have generally elected the new 7,300-page Pléiade as the authoritative version to be cited.” “The Challenge of Translation” that Shattuck expounded is another topic waiting for your research. |
