Portrait of Marcel Proust 1892 Oil on canvas H. 73.5; W. 60.5 cm Paris, Musée d'Orsay Jacques-Emile Blanche, an admired portraitist in the 1880s, portrayed Proust as a young man, aged 21, when he was still only a social chronicler. Blanche was then developing a brilliant, rapid technique; but this portrait is highly restrained and particularly powerful. Young Proust with his great dark eyes and sensual mouth is already a little more than a dandy: the perfect oval of his face and the pallor of his complexion give him a grave almost Christ like look. That probably explains why this portrait has remained the best-known and most accurate representation of the man who was not yet the author of Remembrance of Things Past. Proust kept this painting until he died in 1922. (Introduced by Musée d'Orsay) |

1922 年 11 月 18 日 ， 86 年前的這一天，Céleste Albaret 悲痛不已的看著她長年日夜顛倒，無微不至費心照顧的 Monsieur Proust 溘然長逝 …. 就在這本今年年初買到的 Céleste Albaret 口述的傳記 Monsieur Proust ，對於 Proust 死前仍不眠不休地校正文稿，有著極為詳實的描述，他對文學志業奉獻的執著確實令人動容，也令人不忍卒讀。 那年去到巴黎，對於 Proust 還沒有像現在這麼迷戀，但冥冥中卻也吸引著我跑到拉榭思神父墓園 Cimetière du Père Lachaise，在那裡你可以看到許多名人的墓碑，像是 Oscar Wilde、Frederick Chopin、Jim Morrison 等等，當然還有 Marcel Proust http://www.cemetery.org/Lachaise/proust.html 時隔多年，那個黑色長方的 墓碑仍深深烙印在我的腦海，Marcel PROUST 1871-1922 幾個字簡單雋永地刻劃出他短暫而發光發亮的年華 我將繼續追尋探索您留給我們的經典巨作 ... Rest in peace ！ |
