President Ma’s verse

The other day President Ma came to visit Professor Shen Chuan-san, the paralyzed ex-president of Qinghua University, to whom Ma recited a piece of his verse, "Farewell", in front of all guests(needless to say, including media). Ma wrote the verse when he was Minister of Justice, and bestowed it upon Shen for his resigning from the post as a minister without porfolio.

Reports said Shen, confined in wheelchair, winked his eyes at Ma at first, and later laboriously turned his head to the door when Ma left, seemed to see him off, and bid him adieu.  Such a scene surprised and moved everybody in the room. It’s also said that Shen liked the verse very much, and had asked Ma to send him a handwriting copy.

Here is my translation of the verse and the original version:

"Hastily, I accompanied you to the office; hastily, I escorted you to leave the post. An opponent to offer, but a proponent to differ. Against all your zeal, ten months’ tenure turned out to be a pipedream. Shrugging off everything, you were as philosophical and debonair as usual.  When the sound of honk faded away, the very thought of you started to grow in my heart."

P.S. Remember the story happened between Shen and Chi Cheng?
