You waved me off as I started off. How could I stand facing the heart that was aching, lamenting the sadness in this leave-taking? Your eyes and brows registered a hue of grief, as tears watered, yet to shed. I know you got me wrong about what I wrote you earlier, 過眼滔滔雲共霧, but soon the clouds and mists were gone away. In this world only you and I are alter egos and loving mates. Do Heaven know it well, 天知否? how do we suffer like hell? Heavy frost shrouded on the road to East Gate at dawn 照橫塘半天殘月, while the waning moon still lingered and shone on the pond 凄清如許。 what a woeful scene it was! Our hearts were broken as the sound of steamship whistle blowed, from now on we would be on the way to a lonesome journey endlessly To amend the broken heartstrings till we meet again, 要似崑崙崩絶壁, must we have the resolve to let the cliffs of Mt Kunlun tumble down, 又恰像颱風掃寰宇. or to let the typhoon sweep all over the whole world. Then flying abreast without a line, 和雲翥。 again we are on cloud nine.
PS It is said that Chairman Mao wrote the poem to his beloved wife, Yang Kaihui in 1923 when he headed to Huangpu Military Academy. (FYI, Mao was once the head of propagada for KMT.) Since then the couple had never met again, for later Yang sacrificed her life after Chiang regime betrayed the revolution. Some textual research points out that Mao wrote this poem for someone else, not for Yang, but I would rather believe it is not true. |
