| 我在看一篇文章時, 通常會特別注意標題還有第一段, 因為作者會寫出裡面要表達的主要意思所用的英文單字. 同時間, 我在內文裡面, 會再去尋找作者所應用的其他類似/相同意義的單字.
昨天看到一篇文章, 它的標題和第一段是說: (美國的)房地產仲介公司是四處在裁員. 這些公司怪罪/歸咎於買房的需求減少, (低於預期的17%), 是一個原因促成這個必要性的裁員. Real estate companies are laying off staff right and left. The companies blamed decreased demand for homebuying, which was 17% below expectations, as the reason such a large layoff was necessary. 看完上面這一段, 我就特別注意right and left, 是不是內文中有相同意思的單字. 我找到了sweeping "廣泛的, 徹底的"這個字. 作者說: (因為裁員), 這是不是代表泡沫已經來了. 對某些人來說, 這種全面廣泛的裁員, 是一個泡沫的明確訊號. Does this mean the bubble is already here? For some, such sweeping layoffs are a clear sign of a bubble. 附註: 有趣的是, 平常我們都是用 left and right 來描述四面八方, 但是作者是用 right and left. 因此, 我又重複查了字典, 兩種寫法都可以, 我也是第一次發現, 可以前後順序不同. 各位大德以後可不必煩惱記錯順序了. left and right = right and left 1. 向(或在)左右兩方, 在四面八方, 到處, 不分青紅皂白 The enemy was surrounded right and left and finally surrendered. 敵人四面被圍終於投降了.
