The Crushing of a Flower Urban Epitaph, Part Four Does wisdom come from his full belly Or from his neighbour’s empty cup? How wise is he, that people starve while he eats? Jammed by their traffic, he takes a deep breath Bravely crosses Ratchadamnern Road Racing across the street, wondering, “Where are the mangoes along the boulevard The corridors of abundant trees Or are those only grandma’s memories? If we have truly progressed Then we would see the foolishness Of our superiority But my guilty heart Does not feed the masses My empathy shares no wealth” He steps upon a flower from another universe A flower not perfect, but special; now crushed A flower frightened; delicate; bears gentleness to his fingers His smile warms; He wishes to know the colours of the flower’s dream But stands back upon hearing fire
