論文寫作中要比較或討論研究結果時，常會用「倍數」來表達其差異，句型有以下數種：

1.倍數詞 + 比較級Adj. + than

此句型中的形容詞要用比較級，而倍數詞除了「半倍」是half、「兩倍」是twice之外，其他倍數都是由數字加上times所組成，例如「三倍」是three times，「四倍」是four times，以此類推。另外必須注意要同類的對象才能比較，例句如下：

Your dog’s sense of smell is up to 100,000 times greater than yours.（你的狗的嗅覺比你要靈敏十萬倍。）

→句末的yours指的是your sense of smell，如此才能與your dog’s sense of smell作比較。許多同學會只寫you，寫出像下面這個錯誤的句子：

* Your dog’s sense of smell is up to 100,000 times greater than you.

→此句變成把狗的嗅覺和人作比較，是不同事物的比較，這在中文寫作中雖可被接受，但在英文中卻是錯誤的寫法。

2.倍數詞 + as + 原級Adj. + as

此句型中的形容詞要用原級，而不是第一種句型中所用的比較級形容詞。

The distance is three times as long as the previous one.（此距離是前者的三倍長。）

The Akita is twice as large as the Shiba Inu.（秋田犬是柴犬的兩倍大。）

This device is half as heavy as that one.（這個儀器是那個的一半重。）

3.倍數詞 + the + N. + of + N.

這個句型可和上述的第二種句型代換，把第二種句型中的Adj. 改成N.，再加上the和of，則可表相同的意義。

The distance is three times the length of the previous one.
（此距離是前者的三倍長。）

→注意length和long的區別
= The distance is three times as long as the previous one.

The Akita is twice the size of the Shiba Inu.（秋田犬是柴犬的兩倍大。）

→注意size和large的區別
= The Akita is twice as large as the Shiba Inu.

This device is half the weight of that one.（這個儀器是那個的一半重。）

→注意heavy和weight的區別
= This device is half as heavy as that one.

4.V. + (by) + 倍數詞

可直接在表變化成長的動詞例如increase（增加）、decrease（減少）、grow（成長）、rise（上升）、raise（提高）、reduce（降低）等字後加上介系詞by，再接倍數詞，以表示變化成長的幅度，例如：

Industrial accidents increased by 1.5 times this year.（今年的工業意外增加1.5倍。）

5.V.（表倍數的動詞）

表倍數變化，亦可直接使用表倍數的動詞，如double（兩倍）、triple（三倍）、quadruple（四倍）、quintuple（五倍）、sextuple（六倍）等，例如：

The number of students learning Chinese has tripled in the last three years.（學習中文的學生人數增加到三年前的三倍。）

欲表達事物的變化，除了倍數的比較之外，也可採用百分比的比較，例句如下：

In South Korea, 160,000 high school and university students are studying the Chinese language, an increase of 66% over the past five years.（在南韓，16萬名的高中和大學生正在學習中文，比過去五年增加了66%。）

→此處的increase作名詞用，而非動詞，因此其前加不定冠詞an，其後加介系詞of，再加百分比的數字。
