There is a major IRS phone scam going on, and I think it is critical that all of us in the IRS are aware of it and of how to tell taxpayers to report it to TIGTA. Despite multiple public warnings issued by IRS and TIGTA since last year, and a lot of media coverage, I’m hearing from IRS employees and managers alike who don’t seem to be aware of the scam or how taxpayers should report it to TIGTA. If you are already aware, please disregard this message.
The scammers call and claim to be IRS employees. They tell you that you owe money to the IRS and must pay immediately, usually by loading money on a prepaid debit card then giving them the number off the card.
The scammers often “spoof” the caller ID to make it look like it’s the IRS calling or that the call is coming from Washington, DC, or some other location in the USA. They likely are calling from a foreign country and usually have American-sounding names but speak with foreign accents.
The scammers may leave a message telling you to call back. They also may know a lot about you – your SSN, your address, where you work, etc. If you don’t cooperate, they usually threaten to have you arrested. If you hang up, they may call back repeatedly. They may also call back and “spoof” the caller ID to make it appear that a local law enforcement agency is calling.
The bottom line is that IRS doesn’t operate this way. For more information, and to see how the scam can be reported to TIGTA by phone or online, visit the TIGTA website: http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/
Be aware, too, that this same scam is being perpetrated by callers using other approaches, such as saying that you haven’t paid your electric bills and your power will be shut off if you don’t pay immediately, or that you failed to show up for jury duty and will be arrested if you don’t pay a fine immediately. The bottom line is that if anyone calls and demands that you pay immediately over the phone for anything, it’s probably a scam.
Be vigilant, stay safe.
