Where is Your Social Sensitivity?

At first, I thought it is part of a new culture that I need to get used to. After all I was brought up and grew up in a very different culture. Then I realized the problem is that a lot of Americans are lack of common sense or social sensitivity.

They are pretty much ignorant about things outside their city limit where they live.

I was asked by one of my coworkers on 4th of July, "So, do Chinese celebrate 4th of July?" This is the MOST STUPID thing I have ever heard. "Well, Chinese do have 4th of July EVERY YEAR. So do Japanese, Korean, British or the rest of the world. But I do believe that only Americans celebrate that day," I told this girl. Maybe we should rename Independance Day as American's Independance Day?

And I thought my own family could have known me better until my mother in law asked me this several years ago, "which part of Thailand are you from, dear?" After I had married into this family for half a decade, MIL still found the far east is way too far for her to handle.

They try hard to be sincere and want to have a conversation with you but they do not intentionally want to know you as a person.

I was asked by one of my coworkers at my craziest busy working hour in the morning, "So do you cook a lot of Chinese food?" EXCUSE ME? Do you REALLY want to know? Or, "how many brothers or sisters do you have?" Well, if you are not demented or mentally retarded, I have answered the same question the fifth time since I have known you. Maybe I should put up a sign on my forehead so that you will remember next time when there are only two of us sitting in a room. I'd say knowing when to shut the f*ck up is the key. Yapping for no reason is a SIN.

They are rude when you do not matter to them.

Take talking on a cell phone in the public for example. First of all, the purpose of carrying a cell phone with you is so that you will not miss an EMERGENCY phone call, but it's NOT that you can carry out your private conversation from your living room to the public. Where is your courtesy, really? The rest of the world do NOT need to hear what you cooked for dinner last night while we are shopping at Meijer's, or while we are at the grocery checkout, or while we are on a train ride from Detroit to Chicago.

Talking on a cell phone or texting while driving is just WRONG. They are dangerous on the road just as much as people of DUI. It becomes ANNOYING when they drive on the left lane. Speed up, slow down, speed up again, then slow down. Well, move the f*ck over to the right lane if you want to talk on a phone on the road. Multitasking does not apply on the road!

Not to say that people leave their grocery cart in the middle of hallway, peolpe walk in the middle of the road in the parking lot thinking that pedastrians have the right of way, or a group of cyclists of 10MPH in the middle of the road blocking the traffic at 7o'clock in the morning.

So people, where is your social sensitivity?

haha just love reading all these !

vancouverites are well trained about the "multi-cultural" issue; but believe me, with > 50% visible "minority" in town, you see even bigger multi-problems....

I got all kinds of weird questions too - in the US

but you can be glad that at least they asked, otherwise they just would live in their own imagination.

Do you think it might be different on the east and west coasts? I lived in the Midwest for over three years and felt that local people are quite ignorant there. There were lots of European and Asian students and professors with international backgrounds though. It was fine on the campus, but outside the campus it was a totally different world.

In Germany I don't have much of that problem, many people know where Taiwan is and the political issues between China and Taiwan.

LOL. i do think people in the midwest are kinda still living in the 19th century in many ways. esp here in mich, where manufacture is the only industry...well, auto industry is the only industry. things in ann arbor is somewhat diversified... in chicago are A LOT different -- heaven and earth different. with san fran's china town the biggest one in north america and new york the second, i can imagine there is WAY MORE cultural exposure on either coasts. i think people of older generation here understand china - taiwan geographically and politically because they were sent out to asia in the wars.

May be

Well, I can understand your frustration but sometimes, may be, just may be, they just want to make small talk to fill up the akward moments of silence.  As for talking very loudly in the public with or without their cell, it's just rude.

不然根本沒放在心上

華人也很愛問人有的沒有的

我帶小孩回台灣時

還被人問小孩是妳生的嗎?

I don't like people talking loud on the bus....
2009/09/21 07:39
The bus ride is about an hour.  Many people take the chance to get more sleep or read.  Talking loud is really annoying.
