Someone asked me, Living Buddha Lian Sheng Shengyan-Lu Why do one fall ill？
有人問我（蓮生活佛盧勝彦）「生病」之事？

The answer is, “The mischief caused by Karma.”
答：「業力作祟。」

What is the mischief caused by Karma? The mischief caused by Karma is also called the mischief caused by incorporeal beings, that is, "the mischief caused by ghosts and gods". Some may say that the holy honoured Lian Sheng is driving backwards the clock of science. Nowadays, science is so advanced that talking about "invisible" and "ghosts and gods" is a matter of "superstition".
什麼是「業力作祟」？「業力作祟」就是「無形作祟」，也即是「鬼神作祟」。也許有人會說，蓮生聖尊是在開科學的倒車，今天科學如此發達，談「無形」，談「鬼神」，均是「迷信」的緊。

However, let me tell you in all honesty that in the eyes of an enlightened person, there are indeed incorporeal beings, ghosts and gods, and karma.
然而，我實實在在的告訴大家，在開悟者的眼中，確實有「無形」，有「鬼神」，有「業力」。

Everyones "illness" is caused by "karma”, which is about "karma". In my eyes: "Hospital" is "The Adjacent Hell".
每一個人的「生病」，均是「業力」造成，均是「業」。我的眼中：
「醫院」就是「近邊地獄」。

A "doctor" is a "jailer" or "executioner officer".
「醫師」就是「獄卒」或「行刑官」。

Medical equipment is the punishment equipment, brain surgery, cardiac surgery, kidney transplant, kidney haemodialysis ........。
「醫療器材」就是「刑具」。開腦、開心、換腎、洗腎……。

Why people fall ill, is all caused by karma, due to karma, one has to suffer from the torture of illness. This cruel punishment is great suffering in the world!
「人」何以會得病，是「業障」所致，因為「業障」所以要受病苦的苦刑，這種苦刑，是人間極大之苦啊！

In this world, the number of Hospitals is really enough. Doctors have also increased a lot. However, there are a lot more "people" fell ill, a lot more are tortured from punishment, a lot more weird diseases and many more deaths.
在這世間，醫院實在夠多了。醫師也增加甚多。但，「人們」得病的更多，「受刑」的更多，「怪病」更多，「死」的也更多。

This is because "people" continue to create all kinds of "karma" and simply do not stop.
這是因為「人們」繼續造種種的「業」，根本不停所致。

醫院多，醫師多，病的多，死的多，這是因果循環，業力循環。《蓮生活佛著作第80集“佛王之王”第15篇【第十五章：開悟者的生病之觀】》

Our Buddha Master said that falling ill is caused by karma! The mischief is caused by Karma, which is" the mischief caused by ghosts and gods."
師佛說病者業也！是業力作祟，也即是「鬼神作祟」。

In this Suo Po world, falling Ill is the most suffering. However, mortals are ignorant and delusional, unknowing that getting ill is caused by karma, unconscious of the need and unknown to practice the dharma Cultivation and never strive for liberation from suffering. Those who "suffer from illness" are even more needed to know the importance of dharma cultivation.
這娑婆世間，生病是最苦的，只是衆生凡夫愚迷，不知病是所業造成，不自覺知，不知修行，不求解脫。「病苦」之人，才更要知修行重要。

A True Buddha School dharma cultivator must have compassion, able to prescribe the proper medicine for an illness, visit the sick appropriately, serve the patient with suited food, preach the Dharma to the patients, and be able to tell the metaphor based on causality, artfully speak the subtle of the Scripture and the profound of Dharma, persuading the patient to know the causality, so that they aware of the need to practice the dharma cultivation.
真佛行者要有慈悲心，要應病與藥，要適法看望病人，要能適給食物，要能為病人說法，同時為病人說法，要以因緣譬喻，巧說微妙經法，勸知因果，使病者知修行。

When visiting a patient, even though knowing that the patient is bound to die, one should not say that the patient will die, but convince the patient to become a disciple who takes refuge in the Three Precious Treasures of Buddhism, always mindfulness and invocation of the Buddha, the Dharma and the monk, diligently to practice offering, tell the patient that the illness and suffering are all due to the past lifes bad deeds, this is the karmic retribution, its time to say repentance now. When the patient hears of this, if he/she gets angry, speaks in foul language, scolds in spitefulness, one should keep silent accordingly and not abandon him.
探視病人時，雖知病人必死，亦勿言應死，而是教令歸依三寶，念佛法僧，勤修供養。告知病人病苦皆以往世不善之因緣，而獲苦報故，今當說懺悔。病者聞已，若生瞋恚，惡口，罵詈，亦默然不對，亦不捨彼。

Buddha Master said that even we eat every single grain of rice and a grain of wheat, all of which have karma. It is the same that if we have a minor illness or a major illness, it also has its own karmic consequences. The mischief caused by Karma is the root cause of illness, and the real cause of illness is here.
師佛說我們吃一米一麥，都是有因緣果報的，我們的生一小病或生一大病，同樣是有因緣果報的，這「業力作祟」根本就是生病的根源，真正的病因在此。
