【A recommended book】Paris Versus New York: A Tally of Two Cities

要使巴爾貝克、威尼斯、佛羅倫斯再現，我只消把它們的名字念上一遍，這些名字所代表的地方在我心中激起的願望就凝聚在這幾個音節之中。即使是在春天，只要在哪本書裡見到巴爾貝克這個名字，就足以喚起我去看暴風雨和諾曼第哥特藝術的願望；哪怕是個風雨交加的日子，佛羅倫斯或者威尼斯這個名字也會使我嚮往太陽、百合花、總督府或者百花聖母院。

這是一本有趣的小書。
雖然我比較喜歡普魯斯特 V.S. 費茲傑羅，而不是《麥田捕手》的沙林傑；
又或者我比較喜歡盧貝松 V.S. 伍迪艾倫，而不是新浪潮的高達。
但不管我們對紐約或巴黎究竟有著或深或淺的認識，
在欣賞每一幅插畫的同時，都有可能讓你莞爾一笑。
這是兩個城市身分認同的差異，抑或作者延伸我們對於兩個地名想像的魅惑？

容我再次引用普魯斯特在《追憶似水年華》的一段文字
「戀愛的好奇心猶如地名在我們身上喚起的好奇心：永遠失望，而後又再度復蘇，並且永遠無法滿足。」
