雨從天上落,Rain falling from the sky, 水從橋下流。water flows under the bridge. 拾得娘裙帶,I pick up your hanky, 同心結兩頭。knotting it at both ends. PS: It was reputed that Yang Guang, the second emperor of the Sui Dynasty, wrote the poem for his newly-married wife, the later Queen Xiao. According to official and unofficial histories, Xiao had been forced to marry four different kings after Yang Guang was usurped and killed. Nevertheless, she had longevity and died at 83. FYI, 江陵女歌 was kind of a folk love song with different lyrics of affection that had been widely sung in the south-eastern part of China during the middle ages. |
