銀燭秋光冷畫屏,

The painted screen looked chilly in flickering light from the silver candle,

輕羅小扇撲流螢。

while a royal maid unwittingly waved the silken fan to catch passing fireflies.

天階夜色涼如水，

Sitting on the stone steps of palace alone in this cold, cold night,

坐看牽牛織女星。

she beheld the two lonesome stars always keeping each other at a long distance.
