樑上有雙燕，翩翩雄與雌。

A couple of swallows living on the beam, elegantly flying to and fro.

銜泥兩椽間，一巢生四兒。

They build up a nest between the rafters, giving birth to offsprings of four.

四兒日夜長，索食聲孜孜。

The fledglings grow up day by day, chirping for food again and again.

青蟲不易捕，黃口無飽期。

Insects are hard to find, but little mouths seem insatisble.

觜爪雖欲敝，心力不知疲。

Though they have been worn out, the couple fully use their beaks and claws of the utmost.

須臾十來往，猶恐巢中飢。

In no time they shuttle over ten times, lest their kids be starving.

辛勤三十日，母瘦雛漸肥。

After hard time of thirty days, the mother has become skinny while kids fleshy.

喃喃教言語，一一刷毛衣。

Still she is teaching them language, licking to cleanse their feathers.

一旦羽翼成，引上庭樹枝。

Once the little ones become fledged, they are led to the top of branches.

舉翅不回顧，隨風四散飛。

Flapping their wings, the young swallows disperse and fly away in the air.

雌雄空中鳴，聲盡呼不歸。

The mother and the father call them back with full strength but to no avail.

卻入空巢里，啁啾終夜悲。

The empty nest is the only place they can return to; twitters of sadness are all they can groan in the nights. 

燕燕爾勿悲，爾當返自思。

Dear old couple, dont be sad.  You had better think about yourselves

思爾為雛日，高飛背母時。

when you were young and full-fledged, how did you leave your mother without a lingering glance.

當時父母念，今日爾應知。

Now you should know it quite well what kind of thoughts were on your parents minds.
