Qian Low is a poor intellectual; his wife is so virtuous as not to care about his poverty.

冀缺一農夫，妻敬儼如賓。

Jie Que is famer; his wife always venerates him as an honored guest.

陶潛不營生，翟氏自爨薪。

Tao Qian does not make a living; his wife takes family livelihood.

梁鴻不肯仕，孟光甘布裙。

Liang Hong gives up his official career, his wife Meng Guang is willing to wear anything threadbare.

君雖不讀書，此事耳亦聞。

Though you may not read much, I reckon you must have heard of these stories.

至此千載後，傳是何如人。

Hundreds of years later, we ought to be the heirs of those noble persons.

人生未死間，不能忘其身。

Throughout our lives in this world, we should not forget what we are living for.

所須者衣食，不過飽與溫。

What we need are but adequate clothing and food to keep us alive.

蔬食足充饑，何必膏粱珍。

Meager meal of vegetable and rice will suffice, why need delicacies?

繒絮足禦寒，何必錦繡文。

Clothes made of cotton will suffice, why need raiment made of brocades?

君家有貽訓，清白遺子孫。

You are from the family of good teachings, so let us bequeath the noble decencies to our children

我亦貞苦士，與君新結婚。

I am also from a humble but noble family, fortunately we can wed each other.

庶保貧與素，偕老同欣欣。

I sincerely hope we could lead a life of simplicity, being happily together to the end of our days.
