Every time when I went out to eat with friends or with my family, I would finish eating my food. Even if I just stayed home having meals, I did so all the time. My friends usually said that I was like a very old woman though I was just nineteen years old. Because they thought if I wasn’t hungry then I didn’t need to finish the rest of food in my dish. For another reason why they thought so was that I seldom ate junk food and I didn’t want to enter into fast food restaurant with them. I bought drinks rarely as well. From my points of view, I just simply wanted to have a healthy diet, a healthy body and a healthy life also. Eating fresh was very important and I believed that for always. I wasn’t saying that I hated to eat junk food. I was rarely eating those foods. There was one of another reason I doing so, I was very thrifty and didn’t want to waste. If I was unable to eat so much food, I wouldn’t order too much. With the rising population around the world, food was becoming more and more valuable and was even facing shortage. People in many countries were only having few to eat; some areas were even having famine. Whenever I heard this kind of news, the first thought came up in my mind was how lucky I was. Then that’s why I want to cherish even including other resources. But still some people in America didn’t think that as same as me. Americas discarded nearly half of an amount of food each year, resulting in a waste of $ 165 billion annually. Compared to the 1970s, it was a waste of 1.5 times. However, about one-sixteenth of the population in the U.S couldn’t be guaranteed to eat full. But as long as America slightly reduced the waste of the food by 15%, it would be enough to feed 25 million people. According to the analysis report from Natural Resources Defense Council, it showed that it was estimated about 36 million tons of food sent to landfill annually in the United States. One American family of four members discarded food in the value of $2,275 dollars. It is equivalent to ten times for a consumer in the Southeast Asian countries if when it came to per capita income. This information was very surprisingly, there was a one more astonishing. A young man named Maximus Thaler from Massachusetts in America, aged 22, was one who pursuing "anti-consumerism". He didn’t spend money to buy food; all the ingredients for all meals were found in the supermarket bins. It was like "treasure hunt" in a large of the amount of rubbish. Now he was intending to open a restaurant, free to every customer. Every dish would be cooked from the ingredients picked in the rubbish. I thought the food culture in differemt countries was really affecting people a lot! |
