雖然imaginative與imaginary同樣為形容詞，但這兩個詞彙在使用上強調的卻是不同的意義。Imaginary強調的是並非真實存在的事物，例如an imaginary friend想像出的朋友，an imaginary world則是一個虛構的想像世界。

而imaginative強調的是具有豐富想像意味的事物或是擁有豐富想像力的人，例如an imaginative approach是一個具有創意、不同於一般的方法，an imaginative child則是一個想像力豐富的小孩。

2. It takes every citizen’s participation to reduce the pollution that is changing our environment permanently.
中文裡頭說「這件事需要全體市民的參與」倘若直接一個字接著一個字翻譯成英文，許多人會將「需要」這個詞翻譯為need。但「某件事需要的是…」這樣的句型在英文中常見的表達方式應為“It takes something to…”或是“It requires something to…”。

中文裡頭說的「新年新希望」，倘若直接字面上翻譯，時常被直譯為New Year’s hope；但英文裡頭其實用來表達相同概念的說法是“New Year’s resolution”。Resolution 常用來表達一個經討論後的決議或是經過思考後的決心；因此New Year’s resolution指的是在新年時一個人下定決心要承諾自己去達成的目標，是一種commitment（承諾）而不光是一種hope（希望）。

4. I am trying hard to find a way to improve my handwriting in English.
Improve強調的是改善事物品質或人的能力；通常暗示從一個較為缺乏或是低落、需要改進的一種狀態出發，透過努力而達到所謂的「改善」。例如work hard to improve your English skills或是ten ways to improve your wireless signal，都是暗示英語能力尚有不足或是無線網路訊號不佳。而advance強調的意義是進步，使事物或能力朝目標更向前邁進。例如to advance my career或是to advance my education，都是表達使事業或學業更加「精進」，但並沒有暗示目前處在一個需要改善的狀態。

5. Although he is only 24, he has already built an enviable reputation for himself in the music industry.
Jealous表達的是羨慕的心情，主要用來修飾帶有這種心情的人物；而enviable則是用來修飾具有令他人感受到羨慕心情的人事物。例如an enviable record或是an enviable woman，都因為本身具備有美好的特質而令他人感到欣羨之情，而jealous卻是用來修飾受到影響、具有這種心情的對象。
