Midlife Crisis?
2009/09/18 03:10:56瀏覽967|回應5|推薦20

Hubby and I were watching Suze Orman's show the other night.

I have to say that I am NOT a materialistic person. I do not have 40" high definition plasma TV. I do not go to concerts or sports games. I do not have HBO. And I do not have a cell phone.

Compared to my other colleagues, I am a SAINT. I do not go to $80 hairdressers to do hair or colors, do not go to manicures/ pedicures/ facial/ tanning sallon, I do not go to Starbucks/ Tim Hortons/ or Dunkin Donuts for coffee, I drive a cheap Korean car of 2002 and I pack my own lunch to work every single day.

But this Suze Orman is WAY TOO CONSERVATIVE  for my taste.

The thing started with a 44 y/o lady, who has a steady income and a retirement account of $340,000. LET'S REPEAT. A 44y/o lady with a retirement account of $340,000. She called in to her show to request an "approval" for a $6,300 pool she wants in her backyard. Suze turned down the request.

NOW, COME ON, Suze. This lady sounds like she has been saving all her life to have a retirement account of $340,000 by the age of 44. My justification is that if she can not have a pool now, then when can she have one anyway?

I sarcastically asked Hubby, "Maybe Suze will approve it when this lady reaches her 60's. Nah, 70's. Nah, 80's..." I went on and on, figuring Hubby has no good answer for it anyway.

But really. If I was this lady, I would like to have a pool when I AM ABLE TO enjoy it. Let's say, I would like to chill out by the pool drinking, entertaining or simply having the kids playing safe in the pool while I can watch them closely in the house. What am I going to do with a pool when I am 80 years old?

So the timing is NOT right. But is there a correct timing to enjoy life?

"It all depends on what you want from life," Hubby said. Good question. But what if I do enjoy a big screen plasma TV? Some people choose to pay for their kid's education instead of having a student loan. I know a lot of Chinese parents use their whole retirement money to fund for the children's education. Is that supposed to be a right thing to do then?

Then next day we brought up the same question to my father in law. Thought as wise and old as an 86y/o, an Italian immigrant, and a self employed builder all his life, he must have had something to say about life and money.

"...You CAN'T have what you want from life. That's it," he said. All of a sudden the argument stopped between Hubby and I.

HMMM. I definitely would like to build a pool in my backyard by 44.

ha, thats one way to live a stress free life style ...by either not having a pool in the back yard, or not managing family finance.

I probably would have bought it and regretted later...

We are thinking about buying a plasma TV or LED TV, whatever it is called. It can be hung on the wall and can save quite some space in our small apartment. My hubby wants it and I agreed. He is not an impulse shopper though, he has been comparing prices, functions, consumption of electricity etc. etc. of different TV brands since over a year.

I have seen Suze a few times on Larry King and found her very serious. I figured she had to because there were just too many Americans having money problems. Believe it or not, I even ordered one of her books to get some financial advice from her.

not only 6300

You need to maintain the pool every year.   It costs money and energy.  You also have to watch your backyard in the summer, so small children will not 偷溜進去.  A friend of mine had a pool in her yard before.  Eventially they decided to switch to a house without a pool.

yea, i heard it. the cost of living is CRAZY. like having a boat here at the great lake area -- you buy a boat, then the gas to fuel the boat when you use the boat in the summer, then the docking fees when you don't 8 months out of 12. $10,000 a year to have a boat.

its ALWAYS more than what it looks like, isn't it?

nothing special

I wouldn't use conservative to describe Suzi. Do remember, she is so called Finance Counselor who is making money from your saving. However, she got a point.

Using that $6300.00 as the principle, and you know that the Bank rate is compound rate, say, for the next 20+ years, this 44 yrs old lady has a minimum 3% annual rate on her account and she did not put more $$$ to her saving; the $6300.00 will be reached to $11720.00 at her age to 65; it has nearly doubled, which means she has that $340000.00 on hand now; she will have $632500.00 at 65 later even she does not add more $$$ to her account.

So, if you want to have $340000.00 when you are 44, you need to have $190608.33 on your bank account when you're 25 with 3% annual rate; or, you should have $128300.22 on your bank account when you're 25 with 5% annual rate.

btw, i CAN NOT find any markets right now that gives 3% or 5% rate except the stock market in the long haul. but seeing that the baby boomers delaying retirement because of the loss in the market in 2008 makes me CRINGE. so...i would still get a pool by 44.

So, you have it all figured out, NS. LOL...

ok, maybe 90% of the time she is right. but i still think its too late to have a pool by 65. i might want a plastic surgery though. LOL...

too young

Dear Purr:

It's nice to hear from you again after the long summer break.

I thought you are too young to think about midlife crisis. You are different partly because of the Chinese blood running inside your veins. Hahaha.

Welcome back!
