On the first day when we arrived Changsha, the tour guide led us to Huangxing Road, a long, broad, hustle and bustle promenade in downtown. As implied by the name itself, the road is named in memory of Mr Huang Xing, a native of Changsha and one of the most meritorious heros who overthrew Qing Dynasty and founded the Republic. There erects a huge sculpture of Mr Huang Xing at an intersection of the road, and on the four sides of the pedestal are carved with his heroic deed in different times. (Please see the photo from internet as attached below.) Besides in Changsha, there are many roads named after him in other cities of Mainland. (Thanks to Heaven, there is a Keqiang Rd. near Tianmu in Taipei. FYI, his aka Huang Keqiang) It is a good thing to memorize historic heros in this way, although I think it is not quite right to name a totally commercialized street after such a great man.
P.S. Mr Huang Xing is one of the most important founders of the Republic. But KMT failed to give him appropirate stature in its history. The mourning couplet given by 章太炎 could best describe the contribution of Huang Xing had made to China: "無公則無民國,有史必有斯人". There had never lacked of romances during revolution, and the love story between Huang and his second wife Ms. Xu Zhonghan(徐宗漢) was the highly eulogized one. |
