Joseph Needham(李約瑟) is a British scientist, historian, and most of all, a great sinologist.  His magnum opus "Science and Civilisation in China"(中國的科學與文明) raised a riddle of how a highly civilized China in medieval age hadn't become the pioneer of the world that leading the development of modern science and technology.  (Regretfully, I have not read the book yet.)
