〈沒有被選的路〉

春季三月出生的二十世紀美國詩人羅伯特‧佛洛斯特這首〈沒有被選的路(The Road Not Taken)〉是我很喜歡的詩。人生有很多時候必須作選擇,有的選擇讓人後悔,有的選擇卻無悔無怨;有些選擇簡單,有些選擇困難;有些被選出的路平坦順遂,有些被選出的路崎嶇坎坷。最後一段詩節可以看出,選擇並不能保證無悔,但是詩人明白,當下的所有,都是當初一個個不同的選擇累積,帶有些許人生告白(confession)意味。

沒有被選的路

兩路分歧黃樹林中,
可惜我無法都走
而旅人隻身,我佇立良久
極目眺望一路之盡頭
見它蜿蜒隱沒;

而選另一條,秀麗依舊,
也許引人更勝,
因它綠草茵茵而盼人行走;
即使回首路過
人跡並無不同,

而清晨兩路同延
落葉下無足跡沉踏顏色。
喔,我把第一條留到另一天!
然知路路相連,
我懷疑我該會回頭。

我該會嘆息地這麼說
那此後某個時空:
兩路分歧樹林中,而我──
我選了那條少人行至的路,
而那就造就了所有的不同。

And sorry I could not travel both 
And be one traveler, long I stood    
And looked down one as far as I could        
To where it bent in the undergrowth;            

Then took the other, as just as fair,          
And having perhaps the better claim,

Though as for that the passing there        
Had worn them really about the same,      

And both that morning equally lay    
In leaves no step had trodden black.          
Oh, I kept the first for another day!       
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,     
I doubted if I should ever come back.       

I shall be telling this with a sigh   
Somewhere ages and ages hence:          
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—       
I took the one less traveled by,              
And that has made all the difference.
