Hubei, Chongqing and Hunan Provinces


The 3-week 2014 High Bridge trip was yet another successful tour through the towering mountains of Western China with 4 big bridge fans including our first 2 U.S. tourists as well as a couple from Australia. With mostly sunny days and average temperatures the trip was great for sightseeing and photography. We also managed to get in some awesome construction tours at the Beipanjiang Railway Bridge Qinglong, the Beipanjiang Bridge Duge, the Zongxihe arch bridge, Najiehe Railway Bridge, Mengdonghe Bridge and Zhongjianhe among others.

为期三周的2014年高桥之旅是又一次成功的旅行。一起穿越中国西部高耸群山的团员包括两名美国成员(都是退休华裔工程师)和一对澳洲夫妇(加上作者、翻译及司机共7人)。一路遇到的大多是阳光灿烂和中等气温的日子,便于观景和摄影。除去已建成的桥梁外,我们还参观了一些令人望而兴叹的建设工地如沪昆高铁北盘江晴隆大桥,杭瑞高速北盘江都格大桥,总溪河大桥,纳界河铁路桥,猛洞河大桥(永吉高速)及张家界玻璃桥等。


The special spans visited during the first week included Yingwuzhou, Siduhe, Zhijinghe, Tieluoping, Longtanhe, Shuanghekou, Zhongjianhe, Xisha and Aizhai Bridges as well as a visit to Western China's most popular National Parks of Tianmen Mountain and Zhangjiajie.

In 2013 the beautiful goddess Avalokiteśvara was carved into the cliffside just south of Qianjiang City to attract tourists to the gorge. The bas-relief sculpture is said to be 123 meters high with a width of 69 meters but the top of the sculpture is almost 300 meters above the river surface. Image by John Filmer.

The most famous high bridge in all of China is arguably the Aizhai suspension bridge that rises 330 meters above a small town. A visitors center and tourist walkway inside the truss below the main road deck were finally completed and opened to the public in 2015. Image by John Filmer.

Every trip has a best and a worst hotel and the hotel below the Aizhai Bridge was surely the worst with broken air conditioners and showers with water pressure equal to a toy squirt gun. But the view of the Aizhai Bridge was great. Image by John Filmer.

Fenghuang city is one of the most popular ancient tourist cities in Hunan Province with many riverfront buildings and streets preserved to look old. Our arrival was only a few weeks after a nasty flood roared through the city and destroyed dozens of shops and stores near the river as well as wiping out the railings of some of the footbridges. The special spans visited during our second week included Nanjiang Railway, Najiehe Railway, Liuguanghe, Xixihe, Luojiaohe, Balinghe, Nayong, Wuzuohe, Beipanjiang Railway Qinglong and Zongxihe Bridges. We also toured a famous museum and home of a poet in Guizhou.

Longtime friend Ian Chen and cousin of our driver Mr. Chen gave us a tour of the large housing development he is working on in the city of Xiuwen north of Guiyang. Within the area are a group of buildings that house a museum to memorialize a 16th century poet, philosopher, and successful army commander in the Sung dynasty named Wang yang-Ming 王陽明. During WWII, the compound was used for the quarantine of a big War Lord 張學良 for his action of holding Chiang Kai-shek hostage to force him to clear war against the Japanese. 3号桥就在旧324国道拱桥上方,主跨450米悬索桥,宽36米,双层桥面公路+轻轨,高出谷底约240米,建成后是世界第一高双层桥,下层桥面每边有6米宽人行道。所谓“危桥改造”是为争取中央补贴,原拱桥好得很。对位于城市中心高达240米,有数十条百米-二百米高瀑布环绕的大桥,每边6米人行道并不为过。

其中兴义市中心就有6座:1、2、3、4、高铁、旧拱桥。兴义市本身将从改革初期2万人口什么都没有、与世隔绝的小镇发展为百万以上人口,多条轻轨,高速铁路、高速公路、机场俱全的世界唯一建在峡谷顶上的城市,City upon a Hill,其旧城和新城——义龙新区分别位于数百米深马岭河两侧,马岭河谷内有上百条瀑布,随着上游计划修水库,马岭河水也会变清。

The Nanpanjiang Railway Bridge is the world's 3rd longest concrete arch and was designed by Xie Hai Qing who gave us a tour of the slightly larger Beipanjiang Railway Bridge near Qinglong. Both spans have similar dimensions with a 100 meter arch rise but the span of Nanpanjiang is 29 meters shorter then the Beipan crossing. 从这里往南看,未来巨大的高速公路和铁路桥将在此处飞跃金沙江,距离江面高达200米以上,大约在2020年前后建成

(注:他们此行丽江可不仅是来游山玩水,丽江海拔近2400米,位于三面被金沙江环抱的高原台地上,只有南面到大理是平地。金沙江江面海拔在丽江周围分别是1800-1200米多,和丽江城相差达千米左右。奇特的地形造成丽江如果要往西、北、东修建高速公路、铁路,必须用极大极高的悬索桥跨越金沙江。目前已知未来要建在丽江周边的金沙江大桥有六座:

华丽高速公路 金沙江塔库大桥  主跨1190米,高出江面512米!此桥建成后将是世界最高悬索桥(因都格北盘江大桥是斜拉桥),并且可能会永久保持世界跨越可通航大江大河最高桥梁的纪录,桥下是龙开口水库末端,绝对能行船。

丽攀昭铁路 金沙江大桥 主跨未知,高度估计在300-400米以上,位置接近塔库金沙江大桥。是未来世界最高铁路桥竞争者之一。

以上两座位于丽江城东方,到攀枝花的路上,东面的金沙江是江面海拔最低的所以大桥最高也最大。

丽香铁路虎跳峡 金沙江大桥 主跨660米 ,高240米左右

丽香高速公路虎跳峡 金沙江大桥 主跨766米(预定,开工时可能有变),高250米左右

以上两座位于丽江西北部,到香格里拉旅游区的高速公路和铁路上。架在著名的虎跳峡峡口上游数公里处,冲江河和金沙江交汇处下游。两桥间相隔只有几百 米,将形成世界独一无二双桥凌云飞跃深谷奇观,其中丽香铁路只有金沙江大桥一座高桥及一座桥墩85米高梁桥,但丽香高速公路短短一百多公里中还有十余座高度超过百米的普通连续钢构梁式桥,根据该高速环评报告和Google Earth推算,其中最高一座蕨鸡坪大桥墩高180米,世界罕见,桥面距离地面高度可能达到或超过金沙江大桥本身。有机会挑战世界第二高梁桥,另一座也有 160多米高桥墩,可能超过200米高。丽江-香格里拉高速公路本身将是不亚于三江并流的工程奇迹!

西香高速金沙江大桥东,主跨约800米+,高250-300米

以上两座位于丽江城正北,是国家高速公路西昌-香格里拉段的西半部分,接近云南四川边界。根据环评报告,这条高速在此段两跨金沙江,终点在金沙江北不远。这条高速公路 是连接丽江、香格里拉到泸沽湖、稻城亚丁风景区的最近通道,东半部四川境内是首期工程(距离丽江也不远),包括三座超级大桥和三座超级隧道:卧罗河大桥 ——主跨1330米,高485米(原本以为有570米高,问了规划工程师原来只有485米,不是世界最高,但仍是世界最大主跨的山地桥梁);雅砻江大桥——主 跨790米,高283米;永宁河大桥——高230米左右,每跨200米上下的多跨梁桥。这三座桥均位于四川盐源县。

除此外华丽高速还有座大型梁桥长田坝大桥也有可能超过200米高。其中两座虎跳峡金沙江大桥、塔库金沙江大桥估计今年可能实质动工,卧罗河和雅砻江大桥或许在明年,其他几座未来几年会陆续动工。

这意味5-8年后,丽江周围将从目前一座大桥也没有,变为8座大型悬索桥(每座至少600余米主跨,240米以上高度,其中六座横跨金沙江。可能有三座超过400米高)和无数极高梁桥包围的新兴跨谷桥梁中心之一。作者这次来虎跳峡考察,是为以后做准备。这也符合中国高速公路和铁路由东向西逐步推进的顺序,丽江位于中国西南最边缘,贵州的桥修差不多该轮到滇西了。未来丽江可不仅有古城、玉龙雪山、虎跳峡等自然景观,更有大批叹为观止的当代奇迹。

从一无所有到天下无双,丽江在不久的未来会发生剧变。

After hiking for several hours we got lost attempting to get back up to the main road and ended up on a farmer's property. Our final group photo at a nice restaurant on Kunming's Cuihu Lake. The 3-week excursion was another great adventure with an outstanding group of explorers who conquered a small part of Western China's marvelous, mythical and otherworldly land of gargantuan gorges and soaring spans.
