Here’s a revised version of the text with correct English grammar, and simplified Chinese changed to traditional Chinese:
Hello everyone!
Welcome to "Let’s Talk in English." My name is Esther.
And my name is Garrett. Today’s topic is "visual."
When we look at something, we call that a visual. The name of our lesson is "Snowfall Update."
Okay, so we’re learning about weather and how to look at something that shows us how much snowfall there is.
Now, remember friends, for our visual, there is a visual to look at, so don’t forget to open up your December "Let’s Talk in English" magazines so you can follow along.
Right, and since in many parts of the world it is winter, and during the winter there may be snow—that white powder that falls on the ground—earlier this month, we talked about snowflakes. Well, lots of snowflakes make snow, and it can be important to know how much is going to fall before you leave for work in the morning.
We’re going to give you the snowfall update for the second week of December.
Exactly, it is a snowy time of the year, depending on where you live, and a chart like this can be helpful.
This is somewhat similar to what you might see if you’re looking up how much rainfall is going to happen in a week, right? That would be called the "rainfall update."
Now, "update" is a very important word that we will talk about more, but when someone gives you an update, they tell you the latest or most recent information about something. They’re giving you new news.
All friends, our news for you right now is that we’re going over to Sonya for our keywords.

美景市的每週降雪的最新報告
I am looking at Fairview City’s weekly snowfall update.
名詞 "city" 是城市,
而形容詞 "weekly" 就是每週的。
這是上週的,
日期是12月8日到14日。
The dates are from December 8th to December 14th.
"Date" 就是日期。
總降雪量是19.5英寸。
The total amount of snowfall was 19.5 inches.
名詞 "amount" 是數量,
而名詞 "inch" 就是英寸。
What are you looking at, Sam?
Oh, hi Julie, I’m looking at Fairview City’s weekly snowfall update.
But it’s only Monday.
I know, the update is for last week’s snowfall.
I see.
It’s for the second week of this month.
That’s right.
The dates are from December 8th to December 14th.
Sam is looking at his phone.
So, we start our conversation with Julie asking him what he is looking at.
What is Sam looking at? Well, he wants to know what’s happening in Fairview City.
This is Fairview City’s weekly snowfall update.
Fairview City is a city in the United States, and it has been snowing.
Now, friends, do you live in a city?
A city is a place where many people live. Usually, there are many buildings and roads in a city.
A city is usually bigger than a village or a town.
And here in this city, they have a weekly snowfall update.
"Weekly" means things that happen every single week.
You might have a weekly test in your class, or you might watch the news weekly, right?
And when we talk about something that happens once a month, we can say "monthly."
Or you can also have "yearly," which happens every year.
Now, let’s talk about the snowfall update a little more.
So, snow falls from the sky. We call it "snowfall."
But that term "snowfall" is talking about the amount of snow that has fallen down.
So the weekly snowfall will tell people how much snow has been falling.
Now, since it’s the third week of December, this snowfall update is from last week—the second week in December.
That’s right. Now, let’s go to Sonya for more on that word "weekly."
Sam跟Julie說:我在看美景市的每週降雪的最新資訊。
I’m looking at Fairview City’s weekly snowfall update.
形容詞 "weekly" 是每週的或每週一次的意思。
來看例句:
He’s making his weekly trip to the supermarket.
他正在每週一次的超市購物中。
或是:The supermarket has weekly sales.
那家超市有每週的特價活動。
"Weekly" 也可以作副詞用,來看例句:
He drives to the city weekly.
他每週都會開車到城裡去。
或是:She visits her grandparents weekly.
她每週會去看祖父母一次。
Thank you, Sonya!
Well, Julie sounds a little bit confused. She says, "But it’s only Monday, right?"
So, why would you look at the snowfall update, but it’s only Monday?
That’s today’s calendar phrase:
"But it’s only Monday."
"But it’s only Monday."
可是今天才星期一。
I’m making plans for the weekend,
but it’s only Monday.
I’ll see a movie on Saturday,
but it’s only Monday.
I’ll go to the park on Sunday,
but it’s only Monday.
I know.
It’s only Monday.
But it’s only Monday.
可是今天才星期一。
Sam tells Julie that he knows it’s now the third week of December and it’s only Monday, but he tells Julie that the snowfall update is for last week’s snowfall.
Right. Often, when you look at the weather, you’re looking at the temperature or the chance of rain for the next week.
You want to know what’s going to happen in the future.
That’s very different from this snowfall update.
Right. The snowfall update tells you how much snow there was from before.
Now, Sam tells us that the dates for this snowfall update are from December 8th to 14th.
Yeah, December 8th through the 14th.
Those are dates that have already happened.
Now, a "date" is often the month and that number—December 8th.
And sometimes, a date will also have a year, right?
So we can say today is December 16, 2024.
Exactly. So use this pattern to talk about the date.
Now, that’s the order we use here in the U.S.
If you go to other countries, they might say that in a different order, or at least they will write those numbers in a different order.
Right. In the United States, we use month, day, and year, but every place is different.
Exactly! Friends, it’s time for us to take a quick break.
We’ll be right back with more on the snowfall update.
We hope you’re staying warm on this wintery day.
We’ll be right back.
Let’s talk in English, ten minutes every day, every day—that’s the way!
Friends, welcome back! Today we’re talking about a snowfall update, but there are many other kinds of updates we can get as well.
Maybe you get a news update on your phone.
Exactly! You might have a news app, and you’ll tell it to give you updates every time something important happens.
Just like with the snowfall update, those updates are telling you about something that has already happened.
Right. Let’s continue and find out more.
What does the update say about last week’s snowfall?
Well, the total amount of snowfall was 19.5 inches. Wow!
And the average snowfall was 2.79 inches.
How much snowfall was there on Saturday?
There was 4.5 inches. What about on Thursday and Friday?
It was only 1.5 inches on Thursday, and 2.5 inches on Friday.
Now Julie wants to know more about the snowfall update.
She asks, "What does the update say about last week’s snowfall?"
Exactly. She wants to know what the update says.
Now, let’s talk about some different ways to use that word "update" here.
We heard a noun, "an update," is a chart or thing you can go and look at.
We can also use this as an action or something we do. You can update someone with some news.
You tell them what is happening.
There’s one more similar term we can think of: "up to date."
If you are up to date, that means you know the newest news.
Right! That was a very good explanation. Thank you, Garrett.
Sonya, can you help us explain this word "update" as well?
Julie說
關於上周降雪的最新資訊怎麼說?
What does the update say about last week’s snowfall?
名詞 update 在生活中常用到,是最新的資訊或報導的意思。
例句:What are the latest traffic updates?
最新的交通狀況如何?
Please give me this month’s sales update.
請給我這個月最新的銷售報告。
Update 也常作動詞使用,是更新、提供或補充最新消息的意思。
例句:I just updated the software on my cell phone.
我剛剛才更新了我手機的程式。
或者是:We need to update our files every day.
我們需要每天更新我們的文件。
Thank you, Sonia.
Sam tells Julie that the total amount of snowfall was nineteen point five inches.
Now, there are a couple of words we need to talk about. First is the word amount.
An amount of something is how much of something there is. We usually use the word amount to talk about things that, well, we can’t quite count.
But not always. Here, the word snowfall is something we can sort of count.
We can’t count how many snowflakes are in the snow, so how do we measure it? Well, with inches, or how tall that snow is from the ground.
Right, and remember, in the United States, people use the imperial system, a system where they use inches and pounds.
So one inch is 2.54 centimeters exactly.
We use inches and feet when we’re talking about how tall we are too.
Sam says that the average snowfall from last week was 2.79 inches.
I imagine he’s saying the average for each day, right?
This means if you add the amount of snow there was every day and divide by the number of days, each day had about 2.79 inches of snow.
That’s about 7 centimeters.
So, how much snowfall was there on Saturday?
Well, Sam says there was 4.5 inches.
That’s quite a bit more than that average, right?
That’s a lot of snow. And on Thursday and Friday, they had less snow. How much snow did they have?
Only 1.5 inches on Thursday and Friday was 2.5 inches.
And that’s what you can see when you look at the snowfall update.
You’ll be able to see each day of the week and how many inches of snow there was every day.
Exactly. This way of measuring snow is something you’ll also see with rainfall.
They also measure how much rain has fallen by inches. Yes, Garrett, that’s correct.
Friends, now it’s time to review today’s keywords.
Here’s your first keyword for today: city.
City: Which city are you from?
Weekly: We are going out for our weekly lunch.
Inch: The paper is three inches long.
Date: What is today’s date?
Amount: Is this amount of water enough?
Friends, those are your keywords for today.
You can use them when talking about the weather and in many other conversations.
And now, it’s your turn.
The words for today are city, weekly, inch, date, and amount.
Now, it’s your turn to use them in a sentence.
First:
Jonathan is 5 feet and 11 tall.
Correct: Jonathan is 5 feet and 11 inches tall.
Have many tall buildings.
You’re right: Cities have many tall buildings.
Write down the of the meeting.
You got it: Write down the date of the meeting.
That of sugar is too much.
Good job: That amount of sugar is too much.
What does her schedule look like?
Great answer: What does her weekly schedule look like?
What does your weekly schedule look like?
Will I see you tomorrow here at your turn?
What are you looking at, Sam?
Oh hi, Julie,
I’m looking at Fairview City’s weekly snowfall update.
But it’s only Monday.
I know, the update is for last week’s snowfall.
I see, it’s for the second week of this month.
That’s right, the dates are from December 8 to December 14.
What does the update say about last week’s snowfall?
Well, the total amount of snowfall was 19.5 inches. Wow!
And the average snowfall was 2.79 inches.
How much snowfall was there on Saturday?
There was 4.5 inches.
What about on Tuesday and Friday?
It was only 1.5 inches on Thursday, and Friday was 2.5 inches.
Wow, unbelievable.
What’s unbelievable?
I’m looking at the weekly snowfall update.
Snowfall update?
Yeah, for last week.
So how much snow was there last week?
On Monday, it was 31 inches.
31 inches of snow?
Yeah, on Tuesday, it was 26 inches.
That’s unbelievable.
On Wednesday, 24 inches, and Thursday, 28 inches.
That’s a lot of snow.
I know, it’s unbelievable.
It’s impossible.
See for yourself.
James, this isn’t the snowfall update.
It’s not? No.
It’s the temperature update.
It is? Yeah.
Look, it’s degrees, not inches. Did I make a mistake?
Yes, you did. That is unbelievable.
Yeah, right.
Friends, what do you remember from today’s lesson?
Let’s review with two questions.
Here’s your first question:
What is Sam looking at?
You can find the answer in the conversation.
A: He’s looking at Fairview City’s weekly snowfall update.
Now, here’s our other question:
What updates do you look at?
Let’s go to some of our friends to hear their answers.
What updates do I look at?
I often look at weather updates, then I can know if it is going to rain or storm, or if the weather will be nice. Sometimes I look at news updates too, then I can know what’s happening in the world. But I don’t look at sport or travel updates very often.
What updates do I look at?
I like to look at updates about all the new movies that are coming to town. I really like watching movies, and I like to go see movies that I like on the first night there in the theater. Actually, I have a movie to go to tonight.
What updates do I look at?
Well, I have to say, when I wake up in the morning, I look at my phone and I look at the news, look at the weather, and I look at what’s going on around the world. I also check for any email updates I have just so I can be sure I’m ready for the day.
What updates do I look at?
Well, I always look at the weather forecast so I know if it’s going to rain the next day. So I need to prepare an umbrella. I also look at news or sport updates. What do you look at?
What updates do I look at?
Well, I often look at the updates about the weather because I want to know what it is like outside. If it is warm, then I don’t need a jacket. If it’s cold, I need a heavy coat. If it’s raining, I need an umbrella and boots. So, I always like to see what’s happening with the weather.
I like that question:
What updates do you look at, Garrett?
What updates do you look at?
Well, I like to know about the news where I live, but also the news in places far away in this world. It’s good to know what’s happening. And of course, it’s good to know about the weather.
Right, friends, thanks for joining us.
We look forward to seeing you again tomorrow, right here on Let’s Talk in English. Goodbye!
