修正英文文法,保留中文部分,同時將簡體中文修改為繁體中文
Here is the corrected version of the text with proper English grammar and Traditional Chinese characters as requested:
Hello, friends!
Welcome back to Studio Classroom.
Merry Christmas! Im John.
My name is Ann Marie.
And today, friends, is a great day to learn something new. It is so.
Let’s do that together.
But first, Ann Marie,
I have a question about smells.
Okay.
Her talk about a question is: What is one of your favorite aromas and why? Ah, well,
Aroma is a kind of smell. Well,
it is Christmas, John, and one of my favorite smells or aromas at Christmas time is gingerbread or the spices used in Christmas baking. Amazing!
One of my favorite aromas is the smell of coffee on an early morning.
There’s actually a coffee shop in the city of Taipei called Aroma, where you can actually practice your English for free,
but you have to sign up for Aroma Coffee’s English Days.
They’re a friend of ours, so friends,
now we are talking about a city with a lot of aromas.
I hope you’re ready,
because this is Brussels at its best. Let’s read together!
Brussels at Its Best
This small but mighty city offers unforgettable experiences. Few cities in Europe shine as brightly as Brussels,
the capital of Belgium and the European Union (EU).
The city blends history with modern life.
Narrow streets wind through vibrant neighborhoods,
and the aroma of fresh waffles mixes with the rich scent of chocolate.
When festival season arrives,
Brussels transforms into a place of wonder, delighting visitors with its charm and holiday spirit.
Hi everyone, welcome to Language Lab!
I’m Jack. 我們先來看名詞 "aroma"意思通常是指食物或飲料的香味或香氣。
譬如:
As Hannah walked into the kitchen, the rich aroma of coffee greeted her.
當Hannah走進廚房時,濃郁的咖啡香撲面而來。
或是:
The aroma of her grandmother’s cooking brought back fond childhood memories.
奶奶做的飯菜香味勾起了她美好的童年回憶。
或是:
When Brad opened the kitchen door, the aroma of baked apples greeted him.
Brad打開廚房的門時,烤蘋果的香味撲鼻而來。
再來看 "scent" 這個名詞,它也是香味或氣味的意思。
例如:
Molly chose a perfume with a light floral scent that you could smell throughout the day.
Molly選了一款帶有淡淡花香的香水,讓你一整天都能聞到。
或是:
The scent of fresh rain on the grass was one of Alice’s favorite smells in the world.
草地上清新的雨水氣味,是Alice最喜歡的氣味之一。
再來看一句:
The scent of pine trees always reminded Chris of family camping trips in the mountains.
松樹的香味總是讓Chris想起全家人在山上的露營旅行。
Alright, Ann Marie,
our title is Brussels at its Best. This is a phrase we use a lot, right? At something’s best
and it basically just means behaving well or in the most favorable view of something.
Can you use that in a sentence for us?
Yeah, for sure! Here’s an example:
"Yesterday, the team played at its best and won the tournament."
So here, in this example,
we have some type of sports team, and they played to their very best ability,
and because of that, they won the game.
So here, we see that this is Brussels at its best.
This makes me think that Brussels might be a great city anytime,
but there’s a certain time of year when Brussels is better than usual: the wintertime, specifically Christmas time,
when this city is full of sights and sounds.
What happens in Brussels during this special time?
Let’s read together:
We read: This small but mighty city offers unforgettable experiences.
And what else do we see?
Well, we see here: Few cities in Europe shine as brightly as Brussels.
So, when we use this word shine,
we don’t literally mean to be bright in this situation,
but we mean that Brussels is unforgettable or really special in some way.
That’s right! I also learned here with you:
The capital of Belgium and the European Union (EU),
the city blends history with modern life.
I did not know it was the capital of Belgium. Maybe you did.
We read more about how Brussels looks and feels.
That’s right! We read here: Narrow streets wind through vibrant neighborhoods.
Let’s stop right there because there are some great descriptive words now.
We see this word wind, and you might say,
“But this is how you spell wind as well!”
That’s right, friends. Unfortunately, you need to just read the context to know which way to pronounce this word
and which meaning.
Here, this word means to move in or take a twisting or spiral course.
So, narrow streets are winding through these vibrant neighborhoods.
That’s right! So again,
it looks like wind, but this is a verb.
Wind often, we say, to wind something up when we’re talking about
spinning some sort of string or thread around something.
You would, for example, wind up a fishing line.
But these narrow streets wind through vibrant neighborhoods.
Vibrant means full of life. You can also say someone is very vibrant.
They’ve got a lot of energy. They’re full of life.
That’s right! We often use vibrant to talk about either colors or somebody’s personality.
But here we see the word aroma next, friends,
and the aroma of fresh waffles mixes with the rich scent of chocolate.
We’ve been talking about that word aroma a lot.
Let’s move on to talking about waffles. You probably already know what this is.
This is a crisp raised cake, and it’s made in a special way. It’s made in a waffle iron,
and it kind of looks like a honeycomb on top.
I’m getting hungry just thinking about waffles!
We also have this word scent, which is a lot like the word aroma.
The scent means the smell of something, and here,
we read about the rich scent of chocolate.
I want to go to Brussels!
It already sounds like a great place to visit based on the smells alone.
Friends, this word scent is useful in a lot of different situations.
Dogs like to track the scents of other dogs or other animals.
They follow those smells to find where the other animals are, right?
But we read on here: When festival season arrives,
Brussels transforms into a place of wonder, delighting visitors with its charm and holiday spirit.
We talked a lot about that word charm in our previous lessons.
Holiday spirit here means the Christmas and New Year spirit combined.
What a great time to visit this city!
Well, friends, it’s time for the next section of our reading.
Let’s do that together:
Brussels at its Best
Brussels boasts a rich history that dates back to the 10th century.
Initially a small trading town on the Seine River,
it evolved into a major political and economic center over time.
The city’s architecture reflects its varied past,
with buildings of different styles gracing its streets.
The Grand Place, a UNESCO World Heritage Site,
showcases this heritage, surrounded by magnificent guild houses
and the impressive city hall.
This central square is often considered one of the most beautiful in the world.
Every other August,
a gorgeous flower carpet covers it in vibrant color.
接下來看 "economic" 這個形容詞,意思是經濟的。
譬如:
The government started some new policies to help the economic growth in the region.
政府實施了一些新政策來促進該地區的經濟成長。
或是:
They moved to the city in search of better economic opportunities and a better standard of living.
他們搬到城市,為了尋求更好的經濟機會和生活水準。
或是:
Investing in education is necessary for long-term economic development and prosperity.
投資教育對於經濟的長期發展和繁榮是必要的。
Alright, like many major cities in the world,
Brussels has a long history,
and we read about that together.
We read: Brussels boasts a rich history that dates back to the 10th century.
That’s a long time ago.
It certainly is! We read on here:
Initially a small trading town on the Seine River,
it evolved into a major political and economic center over time.
Let’s talk about that word initially first, okay?
Initially means at first or the first thing or way something is.
Here’s another example of how you could use this word in a sentence:
Initially, most people approved of his plan,
but as time went on, people saw some issues with it.
So this means at first,
people really agreed with what he wanted to do,
but eventually, they decided it wasn’t a good idea.
Now, there’s another word that we want to look at here in this sentence, friends,
and that’s the word economic.
You saw that already in the Language Lab.
That’s right! Economic means the way
the business in a city or a place works. Economic situation
It’s a good word to know if you’re a student.
We also read that the city’s architecture reflects its varied past.
If something reflects something else, it means it shows something that is normally hidden. We read that there are these buildings with buildings of different styles gracing its streets. The word gracing as a verb means decorating or giving beauty to something. It’s a great word, that’s right. We often use this word gracing when it comes to people as well. We have this phrase "to grace someone with your presence." Now, sometimes we use this to talk about famous or important people. For example, you could say, “The mayor decided to grace us with his presence at dinner last night.” That means this was a special thing for us.
Now, we learn about a final location for this section of our reading: the Grand Place, a UNESCO World Heritage site, showcases this heritage. Can you tell us more about the Grand Plaza from our article?
Yes, we read on here: Surrounded by magnificent guild houses and the impressive city hall.
Let’s pause there for a minute because we see a very interesting place here: a guild house. Now, I had to look this up because I don’t know if I’ve ever been to a guild house before. This is a historical building, and it was originally used for tax collecting by municipalities or from merchants. So, this was essentially a place where taxes were collected. I see these guilds were organizations in old times, like unions or companies, where people would pay taxes and get the benefits of being part of a group. You’ll see that were talking about guilds in some video games or older movies these days, and the idea with guild houses here is that they are actually really beautiful, impressive buildings. So that’s why we use the term "magnificent" for these guild houses and the impressive city hall.
This central square is often considered one of the most beautiful in the world. Wow! And one of the things that makes it so beautiful is, as we read, every other August, a gorgeous flower carpet covers it in vibrant color. Wow!
Okay, gorgeous means really, really beautiful. How do we use that in a sentence?
Yeah, for example, a shop might sell gorgeous clothes. That means that the clothes there are really, really beautiful. And I like that our writer has used this word vibrant again, friends, because we already saw it used to describe neighborhoods in our previous section, and here we’re seeing it used to describe colors. The idea here is that these flowers are really, really bright.
That’s right! Well, friends, it’s that time: InfoCloud!
Hello, friends! Welcome to InfoCloud.
Hey, Garrett, I heard you took your wife to that very expensive restaurant near our office last weekend. How was it?
Let me tell you, it was expensive for a good reason. The food was delicious, the music was live, the place looked elegant and romantic, and the service was great. It was a feast for the senses.
Wow! I was thinking about taking my family there as well, but I wasn’t sure about the price. Since you said it was a feast for the senses, I’m going to go there.
The expression a feast for the senses is a very high compliment, meaning the experience was extremely satisfying to all five senses: hearing, seeing, smelling, feeling, and tasting. You can also use this expression for a particular sense, right?
That’s right. You can say, “The singer’s concert was a feast for the ears,” or you can also say, “Our visit to the perfume shop was a feast for the nose.”
Well, friends, we hope your time with us here on InfoCloud is not just about studying hard but also an enjoyable experience.
a feast for the senses 感官的享宴 當一樣東西或是某個地方為我們帶來了很美好的經歷,或許你可以說它是 a feast for the senses。
a feast for the senses 是感官的享宴,它指的是聽覺、嗅覺、視覺、味覺以及觸覺同時接收到美好體驗的經歷。例如:
Having dinner at that restaurant was a feast for the senses.
在那間餐廳吃晚餐是一場感官的享宴,可能食物很美味,場地很浪漫,服務很好等等。
你也可以針對某一個感官使用這個用語,例如:
The singer’s concert was a feast for the ears。
那為歌手的演唱會是一場聽覺的享宴。
這就是今天的 InfoCloud,我們下次雲端見!
Brussels at its best Art lovers flock to the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium to see paintings by Belgian masters. Also, the country’s strong tradition of comic strip art can be seen on the city’s murals and at the comic strip museum. Wonderful characters like Tintin and the Smurfs came from here.
最後來看 flock to 這個片語動詞,意思是蜂擁而至。例如:
Tourists from around the world flocked to Paris last summer to see the Olympics.
今年夏天,世界各地的游客蜂擁至巴黎觀看奧運。
Shoppers flocked to the mall during holiday sales to take advantage of the discounts.
假日促銷期間,購物者都湧向商場搶購折扣商品。
Every summer, people flock to the beaches to enjoy the sun and the water.
每年夏天,人們都會湧向海灘享受陽光和海水。
Alright, well, if you’re thinking about visiting Brussels by now, you would not be alone. We read about tourism there, specifically art tourism, don’t we?
That’s right. Our article says art lovers flock to the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium to see paintings by Belgian masters.
We have a few things we want to look at in this sentence, friends. First of all, this idea of flocking to something. People flock to all kinds of different things, and usually, the idea is that something is popular or a lot of people want to have access to it. So, for example, maybe a lot of people will flock to a certain website to buy concert tickets when they go on sale.
Flock is a word that we’ve seen a lot before in our lessons. A flock, as a noun, means a group of birds or sometimes a big group of people where there’s often a lot of energy. And these art lovers flock to the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium to see paintings by Belgian masters.
This is another great word for us to talk about, friends, because a master has a couple of different definitions. One definition of master is a person who has complete control or mastery of something. It means that they’re really, really good at something. That’s kind of what the word means here. But actually, it has another definition as well.
That’s right. Specifically, masters in the art world means expert painters of the time. Sometimes we talk about the Dutch masters or here the Belgian masters in European art.
We also learn about another style and tradition of art. This is so interesting to me because I didn’t have any idea that this is part of Belgian culture. The country’s strong tradition of comic strip art can be seen on the city’s murals and at the comic strip museum. Now, let’s talk about what a comic strip is for a minute, friends. A comic strip is a sequence of cartoons, and it’s usually small and in a strip, used to tell some kind of short story or a joke.
Thats right! Comic strips and comic books have become more and more popular over the years. Sometimes we use terms like graphic novel or manga if we’re talking about a larger book, but comic strips were often used in newspapers. Here, however, we learn more about comic strips and comic art in Belgium. We learned that the country’s strong tradition of comic strip art can be seen on the city’s murals and at the comic strip museum. Interesting! This is the kind of museum I would really enjoy visiting. I bet it’s a lot of fun to visit the comic strip museum.
But we talk about a couple of specific comic strips here in the last sentence. Wonderful characters like Tintin and the Smurfs came from here.
John, have you ever looked at either of these comic strips before: Tintin or the Smurfs?
Yes! The Smurfs are these little blue people that live in a mushroom kingdom and have white hats. It’s more of a kids’ comic strip. Tintin, however, is a boy detective who has exciting adventures.
Well, friends, it’s time to go on an adventure with our favorite detective, Ernest Finder! This is Fun Facts!
Hello, fact friends!
I’m Detective Ernest Finder, and I have a fun fact for you today: vegetables! That’s right! Did you know that there is a plant called a Brussels sprout? It’s true! But what is it? This Brussels sprout is like a tiny cabbage with a strong aroma. Often, kids don’t like Brussels sprouts, but they’re pretty good for you! Ha-ha! And that is today’s Brussels sprout fact!
Alright, friends, well, we’ve been talking about traveling to Brussels at its best. And Marie, here’s our talk about it. Question: Are you ready?
I’m ready! When you travel to a new city, what do you most like to do there?
Hmm, easy – eat! I like to eat when I go to a new city, actually.
That makes a lot of sense, especially in a city that is known for a certain kind of food. You want to know what it tastes like and what it smells like, I guess.
I think you can tell so much about a place by the kind of food that they eat there, and you can learn a lot about different cultures by eating, I think.
We’re going to learn a little bit tomorrow about the things you can eat in Belgium.
That’s right! Well, friends, that’s all the time we have with you for today. For now, I’m John.
My name is Ann Marie.
We’ll see you next time, right here on Studio Classroom!
你好,朋友們! 歡迎回到《Studio Classroom》!
聖誕快樂!我是John。
我叫Ann Marie。
今天,朋友們,是學習新知識的好日子。的確如此!
讓我們一起來學習吧。
但首先,Ann Marie,我有個關於氣味的問題。
好啊。
她提到的問題是:你最喜歡的氣味是什麼,為什麼?啊,嗯,
Aroma
Language Lab!
我是Jack。我們先來看名詞 "aroma",這個詞通常指的是食物或飲料的香味或氣味。
例如:
當Hannah走進廚房時,濃郁的咖啡香撲面而來。
或是:
奶奶做的飯菜香味勾起了她美好的童年回憶。
再來看一句:
Brad打開廚房的門時,烤蘋果的香味撲鼻而來。
再來看 "scent" 這個名詞,它也是指香味或氣味的意思。
例如:
Molly選了一款帶有淡淡花香的香水,讓你一整天都能聞到。
或是:
草地上清新的雨水氣味,是Alice最喜歡的氣味之一。
再來看一句:
松樹的香味總是讓Chris想起全家人在山上的露營旅行。
好了,Ann Marie,
我們的標題是《布魯塞爾的最佳時刻》。這是一個我們常用的詞對吧?At something’s best,
Holiday spirit
"Initially"
我們有一句話是 "to grace someone with your presence"。
接下來是關於「Brussels at its Best」的內容:
John,
Studio Classroom!

Well, hello!
Friends, welcome back to Studio Classroom. I’m John.
My name is Ann Marie, and friends, today is a great day to learn something new. It is so!
Let’s do that together. Ann Marie, I had a wonderful Christmas. How about you?
I did as well.
I just love spending time with my family on Christmas. It is one of my favorite holidays.
We learned yesterday about a great place that you can spend Christmas, didn’t we?
We did! A place that’s full of holiday cheer is the beautiful city of Brussels, which, it turns out, is the capital of Belgium and the European Union.
That’s right.
We learned a little bit about the history of Brussels, Belgium, to be exact, yesterday.
And we also learned that there is a vibrant art scene there.
That’s right!
Turns out, Brussels and Belgium are known for comic strip art. You can even go to a comic strip museum.
There’s a lot of other great things that you can do when you visit Brussels, Belgium.
We’re going to learn about several of those right now.
Let’s get into our first reading for the day:
Brussels at its Best
Most people never get to see a single atom, but Brussels has one blown up 165 billion times its size. Built for the World Expo in 1958, the Atomium is a museum and event space that you can explore. Its unique design looks back on the 1950s.
Hi, everyone! Welcome to Language Lab.
首先来看 "Atom" 这个名词,意思是原子。
例如:
The discovery of the atom changed our understanding of matter and the universe.
(原子的发现改变了我们对物质和宇宙的理解)
Or: Splitting an atom releases a great amount of energy, which is the principle behind nuclear power.
(原子分裂会释放出大量的能量,这就是核能的原理)
"Atom" 的形容词是 "Atomic",例如:
The atomic structure of an element determines its chemical properties and behavior.
(元素的原子结构决定其化学性质和行为)
You know, Ann Marie, there’s something that I’ve never gotten to see. Do you know what it is?
I don’t! A single atom!
Whenever I look at things, I see so many atoms at the same time.
Have you ever seen a single atom?
I haven’t, but John, you’re in luck! We’re going to talk about this right here in the first part of our lesson.
Most people, like you, never get to see a single atom, but guess what? Brussels has one!
This is great, by the way.
An atom is a single piece of matter. It’s what makes up molecules. Atoms have neutrons and protons in the middle, and then electrons that circle around them.
Those are science words, but the word "atom" means a really, really small piece of matter.
Like you said, most people never get to see these atoms, but Brussels has one blown up 165 billion times its size.
This is pretty incredible!
That’s pretty amazing. So why does Brussels have this atom?
Well, we read that it was for something specific: built for the World Expo in 1958, the Atomium is a museum and event space that you can explore.
So we get the name of the museum: the Atomium. It’s also an event space. What is an event space?
Well, an event space is a place or a space that people can use for events. So, for example, maybe the community that you live in has an event space.
Maybe it’s some kind of courtyard in the front of your apartment building, or maybe it’s a certain room.
It’s kind of like a center where you could hold birthday parties or other types of events.
Now, the event that this Atomium was built for was the World Expo.
"Expo" is another great word for you to know, friends. An expo is a large international exhibition.
So this means that this expo was a place where maybe some type of scientific community came together internationally to study atoms.
You know, Ann Marie, it turns out that there was a Flora Expo here in Taipei City in 2010.
You know, I kind of remember that from when I first came to Taipei. There were a lot of decorations all around the city to celebrate that.
But we have more to learn about this Atomium. How does our lesson continue?
Well, we read that the Atomium is this museum and event space that you can explore.
We also read that its unique design looks back at the 1950s.
And here we have an interesting use of this phrase "looks back," which would normally just mean literally looking at something behind you. What does "looks back on" mean here?
Yeah, so in this situation, to "look back on" something means that you’re thinking of the past, so you’re thinking of this time back in the 1950s.
That’s right! If you saw any of our school rallies last year, we talked about looking forward to something and looking back at something else.
It’s a good one to know.
Well, friends, let’s look back on Brussels after we join our next reading together:
Brussels at its Best
Among Brussels most enchanting experiences are its Christmas markets, which transform the city into a winter paradise.
From late November to early January, one of the most famous markets is in the Grand Place, where a towering Christmas tree and a shimmering light show set the holiday mood.
Stalls brim with delicious treats, like Belgian waffles that are served warm and crispy with delicious toppings.
Chocolate-covered fruit and nuts are also front and center, begging to be tasted.
Stalls offering handcrafted gifts and seasonal decorations line the square.
Visitors can enjoy mulled wine or hot chocolate, which they can sip on as they browse.
接下来看 "brim" 这个动词,意思是装满。例如:
Root’s basket was brimming with fresh fruit and vegetables from the market.
(Root的篮子里装满了从市场上买来的新鲜水果和蔬菜)
Or: Violet’s eyes brimmed with tears as she listened to the emotional speech.
(Violet听着感动人心的演讲时不禁热泪盈眶)
"Brim" 也可以当名词,意思是边缘。例如:
Jeff carefully sipped his coffee to avoid spilling it over the brim of the cup.
(Jeff小心翼翼地喝着咖啡,以免溢出到杯子边缘)
再来看动词 "browse",意思是浏览,随意看看。例如:
Beth loved to browse the bookstore, spending hours flipping through the pages of different novels.
(Beth很喜欢逛书店,花几个小时翻阅不同的小说)
Or: Dave decided to browse the internet for ideas on how to decorate his new apartment.
(Dave决定上网浏览一下如何装饰他新公寓的想法)
再来看一句: Liz browsed through the clothing store looking for the perfect dress.
(Liz在服装店里逛来逛去,寻找最合适的洋装)
Alright, back outside, we’re looking around Brussels, and we read that among Brussels’ most enchanting experiences are its Christmas markets. Interesting!
These Christmas markets do something special to the atmosphere of the city.
We read about what they do right here in our lesson. They transform the city into a winter paradise from late November to early January.
Now, one of the most famous markets is in the Grand Place, where a towering Christmas tree and a shimmering light show set the holiday mood.
We have a great word here...
John: Shimmering
What does it mean, shimmering?閃爍的; 閃光的
It means giving off little flashes of light. Sometimes things that are very reflective might be shimmering. Water can shimmer, which is the verb version of shimmering. Or the scales of a fish could be shimmering, right?
Yeah, we say this about stars in the sky as well. We can say the stars shimmer in the sky.
Now, we have another word to look at here in the next sentence.
Stalls brim with delicious treats like Belgian waffles that are served warm and crispy with delicious toppings. There are all different kinds of toppings you can get on your waffles. I like mine with maple syrup and whipped cream. Oh, me too! I also like ice cream on waffles, but its not that healthy though.
But I’m wondering if we know what this word “brim” means. It can be a verb or a noun. When I talk about the brim of my cup, as a noun, I’m talking about the top edge. I could say my cup is full to the brim, and another way to say that is it’s brimming. It’s more than full.
That’s right. Okay, we’re going to learn about something else that’s good to eat in the next sentence, friends. You know that’s my favorite. Here we go: Chocolate-covered fruit and nuts are also front and center, begging to be tasted.
Alright, well, we have this phrase "front and center." Let’s define it together. This means that something is in a prominent place or in an important position. It is the thing that people are thinking about. It is front and center in people’s thinking now.
Remember, friends, Belgian chocolate is known as some of the best in the world, so of course, this is front and center.
Okay, we read on here: Stalls offering handcrafted gifts and seasonal decorations line the square. You know, John, this Christmas market sounds really incredible to me, and I have actually never been to one. Have you been to a Christmas market before?
No, I’ve of course seen Christmas markets in movies with a giant Christmas tree, but this certainly sounds magical and relaxing.
It certainly does! We read on here: Visitors can enjoy mulled wine or hot chocolate.
Now, mulled wine is something that is very famous, and it is served at a lot of these Christmas markets. If something is mulled, it means that it’s been heated and sweetened with spices. That’s right, it’s got a lot of flavor.
The word "mull" can also be used as a verb when we talk about thinking. You might remember this word — to mull over an idea means to think about it again and again. But if a drink is mulled, it means it’s been mixed slowly. So, you can see how thinking over something slowly and mixing a drink can both have that similarly used word "mull."
That’s right. Okay, so mulled wine and hot chocolate, both of these are great choices you can get at a Christmas market, and you can sip on them as you browse. Now, if you sip on something, you’re drinking it in a very specific way, aren’t you?
That’s right! You can sip on something like this if you don’t want to drink it quickly. I could say I like to sip on my coffee when it’s hot; I don’t want to burn my tongue.
That’s right. Now, browsing is another great word for you to know, friends, and this is a word that you already saw in the language lab. Let’s define it one more time. Browse means to look through something often when you’re trying to find something else. Sometimes we say that your computer is called your browser because it allows you to look through or browse different web pages.
Here’s another way to use the word browse in a sentence: Let’s browse the pamphlets at the travel agency and see the places we want to visit. This has the idea that you’re looking through a lot of different pamphlets and you’re trying to select a travel location.
Alright, friends, we’ll be back right after today’s Info Cloud.
Welcome to Info Cloud, everyone!
I recently read an article about a special kind of library. A library that lets you borrow more than just books. Yes, they allow you to borrow people.
People? How does that work?
It’s part of a living history project. You can check out a person, and they will sit with you for 30 minutes or more and tell their story or answer your questions.
Wow, that sounds fascinating! This human library project exists in over 70 countries. I would love to experience it. Another place you can find living history is in a museum or park. People might dress up in clothes from a time in the past or act out famous events. You can learn a lot from watching performances like this. They are also sometimes called historical reenactments. Walking down the Joffen Old Street is another example. You really get a sense of living history seeing the historic buildings and shops.
Living history describes things that help you see a connection to the past right here and now in the real world.
living history (historical reenactment) 歷史重現 很多人對歷史相當著迷,尤其是歷史劇。當中的人物場景還有劇情,讓人有一種看到 living history 的感受。
Living history 就是活著的歷史。在某些博物館或是歷史園區,就是想要呈現 living history 的感覺。
You get a sense of living history in that museum. —進入到那間博物館,你會有一種活在歷史中的感受。有時候 living history 也會用 historical reenactment(重演) 的形式來表現,也就是歷史的重新呈現。除了歷史場景,可能還會有穿古裝的演員在現場跟人互動。
這就是今天的 Info Cloud,我們下次雲端見!
Brussels at its best The Christmas market is just part of the Place de Vere Winter Wonders Festival. It also features an ice skating rink, a Ferris wheel, a merry-go-round, as well as a life-size nativity scene. Brussels embraces its past while celebrating the present. Visiting is a pleasure any time of year.
最後來看 embrace 這個動詞,意思是擁抱或欣然接受。譬如:
He encouraged everyone to embrace change as an opportunity for growth and improvement. (他鼓勵大家接受改變,把它當作成長而進步的機會)
Anne embraced her friends when she saw them off at the airport. (Anne 在機場為朋友們送行時與他們擁抱)
embrace 也可以當名詞用哦。譬如:
The mother’s warm embrace comforted the little girl when she fell off her bike. (小女孩從自行車上摔下來時,母親溫暖的擁抱安慰了她)
Alright, we read: The Christmas market is just part of the Plaisir de Verre Winter Wonders Festival. I hope I’m saying that right. The Winter Wonders Festival… Emory, there’s this phrase “a winter wonderland” that we use in English all the time, because there’s a song called "Walking in a Winter Wonderland."
You know that song, right?
Yeah, so the idea here is that a winter wonderland is scenery that is filled with beautiful snowscapes and maybe twinkling lights, and it just altogether makes you feel the holiday spirit. But we read here a little bit more about this Winter Wonders Festival. It also features an ice skating rink. I loved going ice skating growing up.
An ice skating rink is an enclosed place where you can skate indoors. That’s right! That word "rink" doesn’t appear in a lot of places, but when you’re talking about the sport of hockey, it’s almost always on an ice skating rink — an enclosed area full of ice, normally indoors. But outdoors, if you’re in a cold place like Brussels in the winter, the ice skating rink isn’t the only thing that makes this a winter wonderland, is it?
No, it’s not. There is also a Ferris wheel and a merry-go-round, which are two things that my daughters really love when we go to amusement parks or other festivals.
A Ferris wheel, of course, is a wheel that stands upright and goes around this way, usually. There are some really good views from the top of a Ferris wheel.
A merry-go-round is different, though, right, John?
That’s right! A merry-go-round goes around in a circle on the ground. Merry (M-E-R-R-Y) means happy, right? So, you’re happy as you ride around. There’s another term, carousel, and that is a specific kind of merry-go-round that has little horses on it that go up and down normally.
A merry-go-round can be found at playgrounds where kids can sit on it, and you can spin around merrily in a circle. That’s right!
We have one other thing that is there at the Winter Wonders Festival — a life-size nativity scene. Now, what is this, John?
This is something really special. For Christians, there is a special thing about Christmas — the birth of baby Jesus. So, a nativity scene is a little set of statues that shows a picture of the birth of baby Jesus.
That’s right, and many churches put on a nativity play at Christmas time.
We have one more sentence before we end our lesson, friends. Brussels embraces its past while celebrating the present. Oh, one more sentence: Visiting is a pleasure any time of year.
Okay, that word embraces can literally mean "hug." You would embrace your kids, right? But embrace also means to welcome and to hold on to some kind of idea or tradition.
That’s right! Embrace can also mean to accept something. So, if you embrace a new idea, it means that you are accepting it and saying, “Yes, this is okay. This is something that is welcome.”
Well, friends, Brussels certainly sounds like a beautiful place to visit any time of year, but how special would it be to enjoy the tastes, smells, and sights of this beautiful city in the wintertime?
Friends, it’s time for something else fun now, and that is our Fun Fact.
Oh, hello, Fact! Friends, happy holidays!
Did you know that the word “mold” can also mean "thought"? Ha, it’s true. To mull over an idea means to think seriously and slowly about something. I like to mull over the meaning of Jesus birth at Christmas. Ha, ha, Merry Christmas to you!
And that is today’s Fun Fact.
Alright, well, Emory, I know that I want to go to Brussels now. How about you?
I certainly do, yeah! It sounds beautiful.
Friends, though, we have a question for you, a little bit of a challenge. Using some of today’s vocab, can you describe Brussels in one sentence? Go!
Okay, this is going to be difficult, but I’m going to try to do it. Let’s see:
Brussels, Belgium, is a beautiful city that makes you think of Christmas time because of all of the Christmas markets. It embraces its past while looking forward to the future.
Well, friends, make sure you practice the words you learned today. I hope you get the chance to visit some beautiful city wherever you might be. Friends, for now, I’m John.
My name is Ann Marie, and we’ll see you next time right here on Studio Classroom.
The discovery of the atom changed our understanding of matter and the universe.
(原子的發現改變了我們對物質和宇宙的理解)
或者:
Splitting an atom releases a great amount of energy, which is the principle behind nuclear power.
(原子分裂會釋放出大量能量,這是核能的原理)
"Atom" 的形容詞是 "Atomic",例如:
The atomic structure of an element determines its chemical properties and behavior.
如果你看到我們去年學校的集會,我們談到了 "looking forward to" 和 "looking back at"。
Roots basket was brimming with fresh fruit and vegetables from the market.
(Root的籃子裡裝滿了從市場上買來的新鮮水果和蔬菜)
或者:
Violets eyes brimmed with tears as she listened to the emotional speech.
(Violet聽著感動人心的演講時不禁熱淚盈眶)
"Brim" 也可以當名詞,意思是邊緣。例如:
Jeff carefully sipped his coffee to avoid spilling it over the brim of the cup.
(Jeff小心翼翼地喝著咖啡,以免溢出到杯子邊緣)
接下來是動詞 "browse",意思是瀏覽,隨意看看。例如:
Beth loved to browse the bookstore, spending hours flipping through the pages of different novels.
(Beth很喜歡逛書店,花幾個小時翻閱不同的小說)
或者:
Dave decided to browse the internet for ideas on how to decorate his new apartment.
(Dave決定上網瀏覽一下如何裝飾他新公寓的想法)
接著:
Liz browsed through the clothing store looking for the perfect dress.
(Liz
John: Shimmering
接下來我們來看“Brussels at its best”。
聖誕市場只是“Place de Vere Winter Wonders Festival”的一部分。這個節慶還有一個溜冰場,一個摩天輪,一個旋轉木馬,以及一個真實大小的耶穌誕生場景。布魯塞爾一邊擁抱著它的過去,一邊慶祝著現在。任何時候來訪都會是一種享受。
最後來看“embrace”這個動詞,意思是擁抱或欣然接受。例如:
He encouraged everyone to embrace change as an opportunity for growth and improvement. (他鼓勵大家接受改變,把它當作成長而進步的機會) Anne embraced her friends when she saw them off at the airport. (Anne 在機場為朋友們送行時與他們擁抱) “Embrace”也可以當名詞用哦。例如:
The mother’s warm embrace comforted the little girl when she fell off her bike. (小女孩從自行車上摔下來時,母親溫暖的擁抱安慰了她)
好了,我們讀到:“聖誕市場只是Plaisir de Verre Winter Wonders Festival的一部分。我希望我說得對。冬季奇觀節...Emory,這裡有個短語叫做“a winter wonderland”,我們經常在英語中使用,因為有首歌叫做《Walking in a Winter Wonderland》。”
John?
John?
