Friends, today is a great day to learn something new. Yes, it is, friends!
So let’s do that together.
Today’s article is called A Safer World for Children.
So let’s begin our lesson by asking: What are some dangers that children face?
While children face so many dangers, really a lot of the same dangers that grown-ups face, they dont have the tools to handle them.
One danger for kids is being treated wrongly emotionally.
I think this is one of the dangers that kids everywhere face because people, we have a lot of problems—that’s true.
I think a danger that I’ve noticed that today’s children are facing is being exposed to things that their eyes shouldn’t see or their ears shouldn’t hear,
and a lot of grown-ups just aren’t protecting them from it.
There are so many things we could add to this list, Jon,
and our article is going to talk about a lot of them.
It’s kind of a serious article, friends,
but it’s a topic that we need to talk about.
Let’s get right into our first reading for the day.
A Safer World for Children
Defending children from the many dangers they face
All humans are born small, weak, and completely dependent on others,
and it takes years for them to become self-reliant.
This means that children rely on adults to provide for them and protect them,
and they face great danger when adults cannot or will not do this.
While governments and organizations work to safeguard minors,
the sheer number and complexity of the issues some children face require a different approach.

Hugh, the company, implemented strict policies to safeguard the personal information of its employees.

Alright friends, here we go!
Defending children from the many dangers they face.
We read here, “All humans are born small, weak, and completely dependent on others.”
Let’s talk about the idea of being dependent on someone or something, okay?
If you are dependent on a person, it means you need them for your survival or to get things done.
Sometimes there’s actually a noun—your dependence—like your kids or the people that you take care of.
That’s right!
And you can be dependent on many different people or many different things, friends. For example, if you have a certain type of disease or illness, you might be dependent on a certain type of medication for your health.
Or maybe your family is dependent on two salaries.
That means, in order to survive, you need the incomes of two different people to pay for your basic needs.
So this word can be used in a lot of different ways.
So yes, humans are born small and completely dependent on others.
How does our lesson continue, John?
Well, because of this, we read, “And it takes years for them to become self-reliant.”
Okay, self-reliant is the opposite of dependent.
If you’re self-reliant, you’re not dependent on anyone.
You don’t need anybody to help you.
That’s right! You don’t need help. You don’t need support from anybody else but yourself.
So a lot of times in American culture, when you turn 18, you are expected to become self-reliant.
You move out of the house, you get a job, or you go to college.
Culture has been changing in the last 20 or 30 years, but typically, this is how it has gone in American culture.
Yeah.
And one thing we know about kids—Anne Marie, you’re a mom, I’m a dad, we each have three kids actually, so we have a lot of kids. We know that they are not self-reliant.
They need our help.
And we read here, “This means that children rely on adults to provide for them and protect them.”
Again, rely on means you’re not self-reliant; you count on someone.
You need them for things.
That’s right! So rely on is another way to say dependent, friends.
These two are synonyms.
Here’s a way you could use rely on in a sentence:
“I’m relying on you to finish the project.”
That means it’s your responsibility to finish the project, and I need you to get it done.
That’s right! And kids really are reliant. I know my kids need me to put their shoes on every day.
Here’s the truth that we read: the sad truth.
“And they face great danger when adults cannot or will not do this.”
Okay, this is the problem we’re talking about today. Sorry, guys, it’s kind of a sad one.
But it’s important to talk about sad things.
While governments, we read,
“While governments and organizations work to safeguard minors,
the sheer number and complexity of the issues some children face require a different approach.”
Okay, there’s a word there—safeguard.
It basically means protect, right?
That’s right!
We already took a look at this word in the Language Lab, friends.
Here’s another example of how you could use it in a sentence:
“HR or human resources exists to safeguard the company.”
So another word you could use in the place of safeguard is the word protect.
So governments and organizations are working to protect minors.
Now, minors is a good word for you to know, friends.
In the United States, it means people under the age of 18.
Now, minor could mean something different, but usually, the age is about the time that a country considers a child to be an adult.
That’s right. You’re a minor until you can make your own decisions.
Sometimes things like voting or being able to drive a car—each culture kind of decides what a minor is,
but it’s normally later in your teenage years.
We also have this word sheer.
“For the sheer number and complexity of the issues means that it takes a different approach.”
Sheer means nothing but the number.
Yeah, here’s an example of how you could use sheer in a sentence:
“They got their homework done with sheer hard work.”
So we use this adjective to say that it’s only because of what follows that the first thing could get done.
So you see here in the lesson, the sheer number—there’s a huge number here, and the example I just gave—the hard work is what got the homework done.
You could also say, “Wow, as a student, I had so many distractions, but by sheer studying, I was able to pass my class.”
So just this one thing, well, the sheer problem is huge; it requires a different approach.
Let’s find out what that different approach may be in our next reading.
A Safer World for Children
The numerous risks faced by children often relate to social issues.
For example, crises such as wars and natural disasters often separate children from their families,
which leaves them vulnerable to exploitation and lacking basic care.
Other dangers occur specifically in wartime. For example, some armed forces use children as soldiers or rely on them for other forms of labor,
which exposes the children to physical danger and trauma from witnessing or participating in violence.
Children are also often killed or injured in war,
sometimes due to schools or hospitals being bombed.
Forcing children to fight and targeting them or targeting buildings where they are likely to be are considered human rights violations,
but this does not stop the practice.
接下來看名詞 exploitation,意思是剝削,出於私利的利用。
例如,the news program exposed the exploitation of workers in the garment industry.

或是,the mayor is working for stronger laws to prevent the exploitation of children in the workforce.

Let’s get into our next reading here, friends.
The numerous risks faced by children often relate to social issues, friends.
Social issues can range from really minor things—trivial things, like for example, education or what’s going on on social media—to even bigger things,
as we’re going to find out in a minute.
That’s right! So we’re talking about how these social issues really affected kids.
There’s a word society that means the community,
and so social means issues about the community.
But now, let’s get some sad examples of these social issues.
We get an example right at the beginning.
That’s right! For example, crises such as wars and natural disasters often separate children from their families.
Okay, so here we’re talking about wars and natural disasters.
And the issue here is that maybe the parents are in one place, and the children are in another place.
Or we could even be talking about casualties here, because both with war and natural disasters, sometimes people are dying.
Yeah, we saw this a lot around the globe this last year as war forced families to leave areas.
Sometimes parents or even kids were killed by war.
There were a lot of kids that were separated from their families or even taken away from their families, friends. This is one of the reasons we just hate war—one of the many reasons. But it damages children’s lives, and we read this:
which leaves them vulnerable to exploitation and lacking basic care.
Exploitation is so sad. It means taking advantage of something or someone. Now, you could actually use this word in a positive way. You could say, "Oh, I exploited the change in the market to sell a lot more of my product," but often "exploit" means to cheat someone, and it usually means that someone is suffering because of that. So like, for example, in John’s example, yes, it’s a positive for you that you are doing well in the stock market, but somebody is probably taking the consequences of that.
That’s right, yeah. And if you get exploited as a person, it means you’re being taken advantage of. No one wants to be exploited. Often, there are really negative things here.
Other dangers we read occur specifically in wartime, and what example are we given here?
Well, here’s a really sad example, friends. For example, some armed forces use children as soldiers or rely on them for other forms of labor. So, this exposes the children to physical danger and trauma because they’re witnessing or participating in violence.
Trauma is a really good word for you to know, friends. You learned about it in the language lab, but let’s talk about it a little bit more now.
Okay, trauma means a distressing or disturbing experience, you know, something that really hurts you, makes you feel sad, or like a terrible thing that you’ve seen. So oftentimes, when kids have to work as soldiers, they see terrible things that give them trauma. The idea with trauma is that it’s something bad that happens to you that affects you for a long time.
So a lot of times, we talk about childhood trauma. This is a really trendy phrase right now, where people are looking back at what happened in their childhood and seeing how it has affected them as adults. So this actually would also be a form of childhood trauma.
Children are also often killed or injured in war, sometimes due to schools or hospitals being bombed. It’s so sad. We saw this a lot even just in the past 12 months. So again, this is a really sad topic: killed or injured by bombing.
Finally, we read:
Forcing children to fight and targeting them or targeting buildings where they are likely to be are considered human rights violations.
Okay, there’s this phrase "child soldiers"—kids that are forced to fight. But that is a human rights violation. Let’s break that down a little bit.
Human rights means the basic rights you get from being a human, and it’s something that the world governments are trying to work together to define what human rights are. For example, freedom of speech is a basic human right.
We also see this word violation here, friends. Now, a violation is an action that breaks or acts against something, especially something or someone that is supposed to be treated with respect.
That’s right! You could say, "The soccer player violated the rules and was kicked out of the game."
Well, we read sadly that even though there are these rules and regulations, this does not stop the practice. It’s not enough just to have a law. Something else needs to change, but what is that? We’ll find out after our info cloud.

Hey, Rex. I was just watching like a hawk to make sure they didn’t damage my car.
Watching like a hawk—what does that mean?
It means to observe something very closely and carefully, just like a hawk does when it’s hunting.
Do you mean a hawk like the bird?
Exactly. When you watch like a hawk, you’re extremely alert and focused on what’s happening.
Oh, I get it! Because Hawks need to have good eyesight and watch carefully to be successful hunters.
That’s right! So you could say a teacher might watch like a hawk during an exam to prevent cheating.
Got it! So let’s say you’ve just planted a new garden. You might watch like a hawk to make sure no pests or animals disturb it.
Yes! You can basically use the phrase to describe anyone who is watchful and alert. Another example could be a parent watching like a hawk at a playground to ensure their children stay safe, right, Rex?
Remember, friends, when you need to be extremely attentive and alert, you watch like a hawk to ensure everything goes as planned.
watching like a hawk 「像老鷹一樣注視」或「密切注視」,意思是指非常仔細和專注地觀察某件事,像老鷹在獵食時對目標的觀察一樣。

A Safer World for Children Even in peace time, some cultural practices can harm children. For example, forcing children to work or to marry young can expose them to danger and deprive them of an education.
Finally, let’s look at the verb deprive, which means to take something away.
For example,
"The drought threatened to deprive the village of its main water source."
"The strict diets can sometimes deprive the body of essential vitamins and minerals."
The noun form of deprive is deprivation, which means lack or scarcity.
For example,
"Children around the world face severe deprivation, lacking adequate food, clean water, and housing."
Okay, friends, let’s finish out our article for today. Even in peace time, some cultural practices can harm children. So the idea of peace time here just means a long period of time when a country is not at war.
Yeah, it’s always nice to have peace time, right? You could say, "In peace time, the country’s economy grew a lot, but in wartime, it was destroyed."
Then we’re given this example:
For example, forcing children to work or to marry young can expose them to danger and deprive them of an education.
That’s right! So obviously, here at Studio Classroom, we think it’s really, really valuable to have a good education. It opens doors, and a good education can help you be a better member of society. But if kids have to do certain things, there’s no time to get a good education. Exactly!
And we see this word expose here, friends. It’s a good one for you to know.
To expose means to cause someone to be vulnerable or to be put at risk.
That’s right! You could say, "I was exposed to the rain when I forgot my umbrella."
Finally, there’s this word deprive. Deprive means to be kept away from a positive thing or an experience, or some sort of pleasure.
Being deprived, you could say, "I was deprived of sleep last night, so I’m so tired."
But being deprived of more serious things can really hurt.
You definitely, friends.
Alright, well, right now, it’s time for today’s fun fact.
Fun Fact Segment
Hello, fact friends! I am Detective Ernest Finder, and I have a fact for you today:
The most dangerous time for children is right before they are born. This is not a fun fact, but it is sadly true. But why? Well, many countries do not safeguard the life of children who are not born yet, and they are often killed. It is sad, but it is important to know because it is a fact.
Alright, friends! Well, this is not a fun topic, and I think we can talk about this in a serious way, friends. How does this lesson make you feel?
Let’s talk about that for a minute.
Well, it makes me feel two things:
One, it makes me feel grateful and challenged by the chance to raise my own kids. So it makes me really want to protect them. But it also makes me feel motivated to really try to help the kids that I know.
Remember, when we’re encouraging you to think about protecting kids, start with the kids that are in your life. Make sure they’re not seeing inappropriate things. Make sure that they’re loved.
I think that’s a really good point, John.
It might be impossible for us to help children in other places or far away from us, but we all have a responsibility to our own children, to our friends, and our family members, and the children right around us.

My name is Ann Marie, and my name is John. Friends, today is a great day to learn something new. It is, so we’re going to do that together.
We have a more serious lesson to look at today, friends. We are talking about a safer world for children. Now, we already covered the first part of the article in yesterday’s lesson.
What are some of the things we talked about then? Well, we talked about how all children are dependent on others, usually their parents, when they’re first born.
Children are vulnerable. They’re at risk. But what happens when there are big conflicts in the world or when children have different problems facing them?
That’s right, we talked about some of the things that go on in society that keep children from being safe.
Some of these risks include crises such as wars, natural disasters, and these types of things can separate children from their families.
That’s right, often children are taken advantage of. And so, what are governments doing to combat this problem? That’s the question we’ll try to answer today.
So, let’s get started with our first reading right now.
A Safer World for Children
Since children face so many dangers, a variety of responses are necessary to address all of them. UNICEF takes several approaches to help children directly and indirectly. This includes trying to prevent children from being separated from their families, and if separation occurs, reuniting families.
It also includes working toward making sure all births are registered so that the children have legal rights. UNICEF also supports research, advocates for laws that protect children, and contributes to humanitarian projects.
Addressing cultural, political, and economic challenges can help prevent dangers to children before they occur.

Alright friends, let’s get right into our text here.
Since children face so many dangers, a variety of responses are necessary to address all of them. Okay, so the point here is that there are a lot of different problems, and you can’t just find one solution to meet every situation.
That’s right. There’s a term in their facing danger—what kind of problems do you and I face, and what do we do? We call that the response.
Alright, let’s get right into it. What is the response? Well, we read that UNICEF takes several approaches to help children directly and indirectly.
An approach, by the way, is a method of action, or this is like your plan, basically.
Exactly! So, you could talk about a certain approach that is being used to solve a problem.
What approach should we take for this particular problem? As we just read, different problems require different approaches in order to solve them.
So, some of these approaches help children directly, and some of these approaches help children indirectly.
Right. One of the approaches is, as we read, this includes trying to prevent children from being separated from their families. That’s really important because if your mom and dad aren’t there to take care of you, it can be a very difficult situation.
And we read, if separation occurs, reuniting families.
Okay, reuniting means bringing back together, right?
That’s right, we learned about this word already in our Language Lab. Here’s one more example for you to know, friends:
She was reunited with her classmates during her class reunion.
So of course, your classmates are the people that you go to school with. You go to class with, and usually after you move to the next grade or you graduate, you don’t see those people anymore unless it’s at a class reunion.
This is when everyone is getting back together.
That’s right. A reunion can be great! Finally, we read on that some of these solutions:
It also includes working toward making sure all births are registered so that the children have legal rights.
If you’re working towards something, it means you’re doing something—you’re working with the goal of something specific. You are working toward that thing.
That’s right! For example, you could work toward paying off all of your debt. That means you are trying to accomplish paying off all the debt; you’re working towards it.
Okay, so we read on here: making sure all births are registered so that the children have legal rights.
So this means that the government knows that these children actually exist.
UNICEF also supports research, advocates for laws that protect children, and contributes to humanitarian projects.
So we are going to talk about this word advocates here for a moment.
Friends, if something advocates for something, it means this is a person who publicly supports or recommends a particular cause or policy. So an advocate is a person, and they are publicly supporting a cause.
That’s right. You could say, I advocate to end pollution in my community. You are an advocate for this cause in your community.
We advocate for these laws and contribute to humanitarian projects to help kids.
Humanitarian means dealing with humans and trying to make their lives better.
That’s right. So, a lot of times, you might hear about humanitarian aid.
So this happens when an organization goes into an area that’s having problems and offers practical solutions like housing or food to help the people there.
That’s right. So helping kids is a humanitarian question.
Last, we read: Addressing cultural, political, and economic challenges can help prevent dangers to children before they occur.
So again here, we’re trying to just stop the problem before it happens.
And we use that word addressing problems—to address a problem means to deal with it, to talk about it, and usually to try to fix it.
That’s right.
Alright friends, let’s continue on right now with our next reading.

Additionally, charities and other non-profits work to keep children around the world safe.
Some provide humanitarian aid to ensure that children have access to food, clean water, and medical care. Others encourage people to sponsor children growing up in poverty, which gives them the means to attend school.
Sometimes people can even communicate with their sponsored children through letters. This is more personal than simply collecting money and makes people more willing to donate.
By supporting these organizations, ordinary people can help children around the world become safer.

The company decided to sponsor the local youth soccer team by providing uniforms and equipment.

Okay friends, we learned a little bit about what governments can do to help children. Now, we’re going to talk about what charities and non-profits can do.
Additionally, charities and other non-profits work to keep children around the world safe. So what is a charity? Well, a charity is an organization set up to provide help and raise money for those in need.
That’s right, and most charities are non-profits. A non-profit is a company that’s not designed to make a profit or increase in money. It’s not a business; it’s trying to help some kind of cause, usually through donations.
But again, charities are specifically for people to help people, so these charities and other non-profits work to keep children around the world safe.
Some provide humanitarian aid to ensure that children have access to food, clean water, and medical care.
So we get that word humanitarian again.
To have access to means to be able to get and use something.
We use that in other ways, yeah?
We sure can. So, for example, you could say: He put the house keys in a place where everyone could have access to them.
That means that they were in a place that everyone could get to. They were accessible.
Sometimes we say you have access to it if you have the keys to a door. You have access to that room.
All right, we keep reading here.
Others encourage people to sponsor children growing up in poverty. Sponsoring means here it means financially supporting someone, typically by paying for their school, which we read here: children growing up in poverty, which gives them the means to attend school. Right, yeah? There are other ways that we use this word sponsor as well. You might hear this a lot when we’re talking about the sponsor for a sporting event or for a certain building. The idea here is that there is a company that maybe wants their product to be featured or advertised, so they give money to the sporting event or to a certain building, and then they become the sponsor of making sure that sporting match happens. In return, they get their product advertised as well. Here we are not really talking about it in an advertising sense, of course; we are just talking about people sponsoring children so that they can go to school. But this is a situation where you will often see the word sponsor. Absolutely! Actually, one of my first jobs was working for a company called Save the Children, and they would sponsor kids around the world. You’d give some money, and that money would be used to help a kid. Part of being a sponsor like this is you normally sort of know what that kid is doing. Generally, you would know if they could go to college. So, if you’ve ever thought about sponsoring, if you ever want to be part of the solution for kids that are in another country, sponsoring is a great personal way to do that. Just make sure you find a good organization that’s very accountable.
We read a little bit more here: sometimes people can even communicate with their sponsored child through letters. So, this is exactly what we’ve been talking about, and we read this is more personal than simply collecting money, and it makes people more willing to donate. So, the idea here is that yes, you can, of course, donate or give money to charities, but if you sponsor a child, it can be a more personal experience, as Jon said. Please make sure that the company that you find is accountable and a reputable company.
We did see that word donate in the language lab; let’s review that here real quick. Okay, to donate means to give something as a gift; you didn’t earn it, it’s just a donation, a gift. It reminds me of the word "donut," which would make a great gift, right? A donut could be a great thing to donate to your hungry friend. So, when you’re donating something, it is giving something to someone in need specifically. For example, before we moved overseas, we donated all of our old sheets and towels to the local pet shelter. That way, they could be used and not just thrown away.
But we’ve read on here that by supporting these organizations, ordinary people can help children around the world become safer.

Hello, friends, welcome to Infocloud. Hey Rex, I heard you never ride scooters or motorcycles. Is there a reason behind that?
Yes, it is our special family tradition that we don’t ride motorcycles simply because they are very dangerous. My dad started this tradition when I was a kid to keep us out of harm’s way, because he’d seen too many accidents that hurt and even killed his friends.
Are you going to keep this tradition in your family?
Yes, of course. I told my kids that we don’t ride motorcycles. I also want to keep them out of harm’s way, just like my dad kept me out of harm’s way.
When a person keeps out of harm’s way, it means they are staying away from danger or something that could harm them. You can either keep out of harm’s way by yourself, or you can keep someone else out of harm’s way. Although it is important to keep out of harm’s way, we don’t have to be overly paranoid about things that could happen. Sometimes it is important to take a little risk to enjoy what life has to offer us.

Okay, an array means a wide range of something. Sometimes when things are displayed or shown publicly, that could be an array too. You could have an array of different tools in the store. For example, here’s a way you could use that in a sentence, friends: There was a beautiful array of food across the table. So, there are a lot of choices, a lot of dishes of food spread out for everyone to see. These dangers vary a bit by location and circumstances. So, depending on where you are in the world, depending on these children’s family situations, the dangers that they are going to come in contact with can really vary.
That’s right! One thing we didn’t talk about much is how different cultures sometimes have different expectations for kids, like how early a child is supposed to go to work, who makes decisions, and even things like what kind of discipline is normal. So, it’s important to be sensitive while we genuinely try to help.
We read that the multifaceted approach is necessary. That means there are different parts to your response, and it’s necessary to ensure that all children enjoy a safe, happy childhood. "Ensure that" is a great phrase to use. What does that mean? It’s just to make sure that something happens, or to be totally sure that thing is going to take place. It’s to make certain that it’s going to happen. So, I could say, "I really ensured that I had the right matching socks on before I left the house." Right?
That’s good! Good job. Okay, well, friends, this has been a more serious topic, and we have just a little more to talk about in a moment, but right now, let’s go to today’s fun fact.
