Hello friends,
Welcome to Let’s Talk in English. My name is Esther.
And my name is Garrett.
Today we have an interesting lesson, and the name of our lesson is Real Life or Online Friends?
Which of those is better? Again, like with all of these lessons, there might not be a true right answer, but think about what the right answer is for you.
A friend is someone that you spend time with; they listen to what you say and give you good advice.
We can have real-life friends—people that we can see, touch, and talk to in our real lives.
Yeah, it’s interesting to put it that way.
Those friends that you meet online are really living; they are not fake people, but you don’t see them in real life when you are out around town.
Right, when you are talking to them, they are not next to you. You talk to them over a screen.
Well friends, it’s time now to learn more about this with today’s reading.
Everyone likes having friends, but which is better—real-life friends or online friends?
In real life, you can hang out with friends and experience things together in person. You get to know many things about them. You can share your true feelings and build a deeper friendship with them.
Having online friends is convenient. All you need to do is enter a chatroom, and you can connect with people who share the same interests.
Online friends can be anywhere in the world. You can learn about different countries and cultures from them without traveling.
Well, thanks, Esther. This is an interesting topic to talk about, especially with young people.
Today, as more and more people spend time on the internet, we didn’t have any online friends when we were young.
Well, let’s go to our Find It question: What might online friends not do?
What might online friends not do?
Listen carefully to find the answer now.
Here is Sonya with our keywords.
Sam 在線上电玩游戏的聊天室認識了一個朋友,他們有共同的興趣。
We share that interest.
Noun interest 就是興趣愛好。
Sara 說這種線上的朋友,可能永遠都不會見到他本人吧。
You’ll probably never meet him in person. (In person 是指親自本人)。
不過,他覺得沒關係,他並不在意。
Sara 說,他比較喜歡交現實生活中的朋友。
I prefer real-life friends. (Real life 就是現實生活的)
與人聚在一起消磨時間或共同經歷一些事情,都有助於建立更深刻的友誼。
It helps build a deeper friendship. (Build 就是建立)
但是 Sam 覺得透過網路,他可以進聊天室,跟世界上任何地方的人交朋友。
I can enter a chat room and make friends with people from anywhere in the world.
(Enter 就是進入)。
Haha!
Who are you texting, Sam?
I’m texting one of my online friends. We met in a video game chat room.
So what are you texting about?
Video games, of course! We share that interest.
Do you know much about him?
Not really. He lives in London and likes video games.
You’ll probably never meet him in person.
Probably not, but that’s okay.
Today, Sarah asked Sam a question. She asked, Who are you texting?
Sam: Yeah, who is he texting with his phone or sending messages to?
He says he’s texting one of his online friends.
If you text someone, it means you’re sending them a message from your phone or computer, and Sam’s friend is online. His friend is not next to him.
Let’s go to Sonya for more about texting.
Sarah 問 Sam:“你在跟誰傳簡訊呢?”
Who are you texting, Sam?
Verb text 是傳簡訊的意思。
例句:
My daughter is texting her friends. 我女兒正在傳簡訊給她的朋友。
Can you text me her address? 你可以把她的地址傳給我嗎?
Text 也可以當名詞,是訊息、簡訊的意思。
例句:
She’ll send a text to remind him. 他會傳訊息去提醒他。
Give me five minutes to read my text. 給我五分鐘讀一下我的簡訊。
Thank you, Sonya. Now we find out how Sam met his online friend.
How did he meet him?
Well, he met this friend in a video game chat room.
That means within the video game, there were opportunities to talk with other people about the game or anything else, right?
So a chat room is a place where you chat or talk to each other.
But we have many words that end with the word room, like a bathroom or a restroom, which is where you go to wash your hands or go to the toilet.
Exactly. Unlike those, a chat room is not a physical place you can go to. An online friend might be someone you’ve never seen in real life.
Well, Sam is texting this online friend, but what are they talking about?
Sam is talking or texting his online friend about video games, and he adds the phrase of course.
This means it’s obvious—can’t you guess that? Yeah, because they met in a video game chat room.
So it’s something they both enjoy and something they talk about.
Sam tells us that they both share that interest.
If you share something, it means you and someone else do something together.
Now, we often hear the word interesting. Something that is interesting is something you want to know more about. But you also have interests.
Those are things that you are interested in. They might be hobbies or things you want to learn about.
Yes, Sam says, We share that interest, and friends, We share that interest is today’s calendar phrase.
We share that interest. 那是我們共同的興趣。
I like riding bikes. We share that interest.
I like swimming. We share that interest.
I like playing basketball. We share that interest.
And I like doing homework.
Oh, we don’t share that interest. No way!
Yes, they share that interest, but Sarah wants to know if Sam knows much about this online friend. Yeah, usually when we’re talking about our friends, we know quite a bit about them. We’ve had different experiences together, and we know each other.
But Sam doesn’t really know this friend; he just knows a little bit. They live in London, and this friend likes video games, right?
So he doesn’t know too much about this friend.
Sara tells Sam, You’ll probably never meet him in person.
In person means in real life or where you are.
Yeah, if you see someone through a video chat or a video call, you are not seeing them in person, even though you can see what they look like.
Sam is okay with that.
Friends, it’s time to take a break. Don’t go away, we’ll be right back.
Let’s Talk in English, Let’s Talk in English—ten minutes every day, every day!
That’s the way, friends!
Today we’re talking about Sam and his online friend.
Some things are better to be done in person, but other things can be done online.
Sometimes, really serious or important conversations are easier in person. You can really see how the other person is feeling or behaving and understand each other much better, right?
Other times, meetings that are not so important can be done online.
Ooh, it’s also very easy to shop online.
Well, friends, let’s get back to our conversation.
I prefer real-life friends. Hanging out and experiencing things with others helps build a deeper friendship.
But online, I could enter a chatroom and make friends with people from anywhere in the world.
Good point! I can learn about different countries and cultures.
But online friends might not be honest with you about themselves.
That’s true, so I don’t share too much with them.
Well, Sarah tells us that she prefers real-life friends.
Yeah, she likes to hang out with her friends in person, go places together, and experience things.
Now, we heard the adjective real life here. Real life means in real life, so your real-life friends are friends that you can see. They are around you, close to you, and you can meet them face to face.
Yeah, usually that word real life means real as opposed to fake.
You could have movies with real-life characters vs. animated movies, but here, we’re using it a little bit differently just to mean not online, but in person.
But Sam tells us what’s good about meeting online friends.
He says that he can enter or go into a chat room and make friends with people from anywhere in the world.
That’s a good point. You probably won’t meet that many people from other parts of the world just in your hometown now.
Sam uses the word enter here, which means go into.
Right, if you are walking into a building, when you open the door, then you enter the building—you walk into the building.
Sam continues and says he can learn about different countries and cultures.
Yes, those people online have lots of different backgrounds, and there’s a lot to learn from them. It can be very fun, educational, and interesting.
Now, let’s go to our Find It question. Did you find the answer?
Our question was: What might online friends not do?
The answer is: They might not be honest with you about themselves.
Yes, it’s harder to lie in person. It’s not impossible, but online, when you never meet someone, they might say things that just aren’t true.
Right? Then that means they are not being honest.
If you are being honest with someone, it means that you are telling them what is true and right.
Well, here’s Sonya now to give us the honest truth about that phrase.
Sara 說但是,線上的朋友可能不會坦誠相告自己的事。
But online friends might not be honest with you about themselves.
片語 be honest with someone 表示對某人誠實,老實說的意思。
來看例句:
He wasn’t honest with her about his plans. 他沒有對她坦誠他的計劃。
Do you want to go? Please be honest with me. 你想要去嗎?請老實告訴我。
I don’t think they will be honest with you. 我不認為他們會對你坦誠。
Thank you, Sonya.
So Sam says that he does know that people are not always honest, and that’s why he doesn’t share too much information about himself with these online friends.
Right here, I think he’s talking about personal information—information about himself. For example, where he lives and where he works.
He doesn’t want these people to know too much about him.
Yeah, otherwise, bad things could happen.
That doesn’t mean you can’t make online friends.
Well, it’s time now for us to review our keywords.
Here’s your first key: real life.
Real life—being lazy is a real life problem.
In person.
In person—let’s talk in person next week.
Build.
Build—great businesses are hard to build.
Enter.
Enter—the guest entered the house.
Interest.
Interest—what are your interests?
Friends, those are today’s keywords! Keep practicing.
And now it’s your turn.
The words for today are real life, in person, building, enter, and interest.
Now, it’s your turn to use them in a sentence. First one:
He’s a future for himself.
Great answer! He’s building a future for himself.
Did you meet the famous man?
Correct! Did you meet the famous man in person?
Next: Only the principal can that room.
Good job! Only the principal can enter that room.
He has an in basketball.
You’re right! He has an interest in basketball.
Last one: He needs some experience.
Got it! He needs some real-life experience. Great job, friends!
I hope to see you again tomorrow for your turn.
Wow, look! I have so many friends!
Uh, look where? Online?
Isn’t it great?
I like having friends.
Me too, but I like real-life friends, not online friends.
Hey, friends are friends.
But you can hang out with real friends.
Well, that’s true.
You can experience things together.
Yeah, but online chat rooms let you connect with people from all around the world.
That’s true. You can learn about other countries, and you don’t have to leave home.
That’s true, yeah.
You can find friends that have the same interest.
Yes, but you may never meet them in person.
Well, that’s true. And they may not be honest with you.
So you shouldn’t share too much.
Oops, too late.
Hi!
Oh, do you want to get together with friends and hang out?
Okay, great! I’ll meet you in about ten minutes.
Hey, what about me?
You?
Yes, me! I’m your online friend, remember?
Oh, of course. We met in a chat room.
That’s right. We share the same interest, so let’s chat.
Uh, I can’t right now.
I’m going to hang out with other friends.
What other friends?
Oh, my real-life friends.
Hey, I’m better than your real-life friends.
Not really. You live in another country. We’ll probably never meet in person.
Probably not, but we can enter the chat room and talk any time.
A good point! But I can teach you about my country and my culture.
Oh, another good point. Goodbye!
Hey, I’m a great friend! Stick with me, we’ll have fun!
Fun! Fun!
Oh, well, I do like fun.
Fun! Fun!
I enjoy texting you and chatting!
Hey!
Hooray!
But I also really like hanging out with my real-life friends.
Hey! Hey! Hey!
I’m a good friend, and I’m fun!
And I can’t wait to find out everything about you.
I don’t want to share too much.
You might not be honest.
Hey! Trust me, online friends are the best!
Hmm…
Which is better—online friends or real-life friends?
Oh!
Ah!
Yeah, I’m coming! I’ll be right there.
No way!
Don’t go!
Hey, come back! Don’t go!
Friends, are you like Sam?
Do you have some online friends?
If you do, there are some things you need to do to be careful.
That’s right. Like we said earlier, be careful about what information you give out. Be very careful.
If they ever ask for money, remember that they will probably never care for you quite like the people who are around you in your real life.
Right, and be careful if they ask you to send pictures of yourself to them.
They might do something bad with those pictures, so be careful.
But also, have fun, whether it’s with online friends or friends in real life.
Well, we’ll be back again tomorrow.
We’ll see you then, right here on Let’s Talk in English.
Goodbye!
