but what could she get for one dollar and eighty-seven cents? Not much.

Then she thought of something. She had something to sell.
So we start off with one of our characters—
it’s a woman named Della,
and she is counting:
85, 86, 87, right?
She is counting lots of cents.
She finds that
she has one dollar and eighty-seven cents in the United States,
and in many countries,
we use the word dollar to talk about money.
Yeah, one dollar is the same as one hundred cents now.
One dollar and eighty-seven cents doesn’t sound like a lot of money,
though that depends on what time
period you’re talking about.
Della counted this money again,
but it was still
the same amount,
and the next day, an important holiday,
it falls on December 25th,
in most countries,
and it celebrates the birth of Jesus. On this day,
people give each
other gifts.
Della wanted to buy a nice gift for her husband James,
but she didn’t have much money, right?
So she thinks, How can I get more money?
And she thinks of an idea—an idea to get some more money.
She has something that she can sell,
and then get money back for it, right?
What does she have to sell?
What we’re going to find out. When you sell something,
it means you tell someone that you have something
and they need to pay money for it,
right? But what is it that she can sell?
Is it something sitting around her house?
Let’s find out in the next part of our story.
Della had beautiful long brown hair.
She could go to a beauty shop and sell it.
She put on her coat and hat and left.
Will you buy my hair? she asked at a beauty shop.
Maybe, said a woman. Take off your hat and let’s see it.
Della took off her hat,
and down fell her beautiful hair.
The woman lifted some in her hand. Twenty dollars,
she said. Sold, said Della.
We learn more about Della. She had beautiful long hair, right?
I have long hair as well. Your hair sits on the top of your head.
Your skin also has hair. That’s right.
Something interesting in English is
hair is called hair wherever it is on your body.
While Della has a plan,
she says she can go to a beauty
shop and sell her hair, right?
A beauty shop is a place where people can get their hair
cut and washed,
maybe even their nails done. And when she sells her hair,
she will be able to get money.
So she puts on her coat and hat and leaves the house.
She goes to the beauty shop and asks
if they will buy her hair.
Now,
the woman at the beauty shop does not say yes or no.
She says maybe because first
she wants to see Della’s hair, so Della needs to take off her hat.

Now Della had 21 dollars and 87 cents. With that, she could buy a wonderful gift for her husband. But what would Della buy? James had a beautiful gold pocket watch. It was his greatest treasure.
"I know," said Della to herself, "I can buy a chain for it." She spent the next two hours looking for one. She looked in every shop. She finally found one, and it was perfect. So, she bought it for 21 dollars.
Wow, so Della has quite a bit more money now after she has sold her hair. So, she does have enough to go and buy a great gift for her husband, right? She has enough money now—21 dollars and 87 cents.

Yeah, a pocket watch is probably something you won’t see anyone carrying around these days, but long ago, before people had watches on their phones or wrists, people carried a watch in their pocket and pulled it out when they wanted to know the time.
Della’s husband, James, had a beautiful gold pocket watch. His pocket watch was his greatest treasure—it was something very important and precious to him, and he cared about it a lot.
So, Della had an idea. She could buy something that James could use with his pocket watch. She wanted to buy a chain, so the pocket watch could be attached to the clothes James was wearing, maybe to the loop where he puts his belt.
What is a chain?
A chain is a long piece of something, often made of metal. In this case, it will help connect to the pocket watch.
While Della spent the next two hours looking for a chain, she looked in every shop. She finally found the perfect one, and it was just right. She bought it for 21 dollars.
That leads us to our "Find It" question: How much did Della pay for the watch chain?

Della wanted to buy a nice gift for her wonderful husband, James, but what could she get for one dollar and 87 cents? Not much.
"How can I get more money?" thought Della.
Then she thought of something. She had something to sell.

She put on her coat and hat and left. "Will you buy my hair?" she asked at a beauty shop.
"Maybe," said a woman. "Take off your hat, and let’s see it."
Della took off her hat, and down fell her beautiful hair.

I wonder if that’s why some jeans have a very small pocket. Do you think maybe that pocket is for the pocket watch?
Maybe, or just to put in a few coins so you can go out and buy a few things.
But these days, you can’t buy much with just a few cents. You might even need to sell your hair.
