《南傳法句經》第17偈
故事為鄙人摘譯自 K. Sri Dhammananda 長老主編的英文版 The Dhammapada,添枝減葉若干。
《法句經》第17偈又輪到大反派提婆達多(Devadatta)出場。在第九和第十偈中,咱們已見識過佛陀這位堂弟的邪惡手段,現在,他又盤算幹啥壞事? 話說提婆達多一度與佛陀一起住在憍賞彌(Kosambi)。當時,他眼看佛陀深受眾人恭敬,供養不絕,嫉妒之心油然生起,妄圖取而代之成為僧團的領袖。 一天,佛陀在王舍城的竹林精舍講經說法時,提婆達多懷著私心走近佛陀,提議由他接管僧團。理由呢?因為佛陀逐漸老邁,該退休了。佛陀沒接受他的建議,反而加以告誡,說他不配承擔如此重責大任。提婆達多狂妄自大,於是佛陀要求僧團默擯之。 提婆達多忍不下這口氣,悲忿不平,矢言報復,三度試圖殺害佛陀。首先,他僱用弓箭手進行暗殺;不料殺手不但沒下手,反而皈依佛陀,成為佛弟子。一計不成,二計又生。他爬上耆闍窟山(Gijjhakūṭa,意譯「靈鷲頂山」),推下巨石,想砸死佛陀,卻只傷到佛陀的腳趾。提婆達多可氣壞了,繼續施展詭計,利用一頭名喚納拉吉利(Nālāgiri)的大象,灌牠喝醉發狂,攻擊佛陀。孰知那頭醉象狂奔而至時,受到佛陀的慈悲感召,竟然溫馴地跪下。眼見謀殺之計一一失敗,提婆達多決定改弦易轍,著手破壞僧團。他以花言巧語慫恿一些剛出家的比丘隨他離開,前往伽耶西色山(Gayāsisa)另立門戶。但撐沒多久,在舍利弗與目犍連的勸導下,大多數的出走比丘自願回歸僧團,追隨佛陀修行。 之後,提婆達多病倒在床,這一病,就病了九個月。一天,他要求弟子護送他去祇園精舍,請求佛陀寬恕他過去的惡行。一行人來到祇園內的水池時,提婆達多直喊口渴。於是,抬架者把臥榻放在池邊,逕自去取水。提婆達多從臥榻坐起,雙腳踏在地上。剎那間,他的腳陷入地裡,旋即慘死。由於之前犯下的罪惡,提婆達多沒有機會見到佛陀最後一面。他往生至一個極端悲慘的惡道,飽受痛苦折磨,直到惡業報盡為止。

017 The Evil-Doer Laments Here and Hereafter
Idha tappati pecca tappati Pāpakārī ubhayattha tappati Pāpaṃ me katan ti tappati Bhiyyo tappati duggatiṃ gato
Here he suffers, hereafter he suffers. In both states the evil-doer suffers. “Evil have I done,” (thinking thus) he suffers. Furthermore, he suffers, having gone to a woeful state.

今世悲苦受,來世悲苦受, 造作惡業者,兩處悲苦受。 念己造惡業,心中更悲苦, 趣向惡道*時,忍受巨大苦。
*Duggati 惡趣。地獄、惡鬼、畜生、阿修羅四惡趣。
