Forced marriage is inhuman If you were forced to leave the one you love and marry someone you don’t like, what would you do? Facing a doom like this, many people would become suicidal or choose to flee away from home. If a person was forced into the marriage, he or she would definitely fight against the spouse, and it certainly will create the circumstances of sexual abuse and domestic violence. We have much evidence from other countries shows that how the victims respond to the forced marriages. Most people would assume that human rights are well protected in the modern societies; however, forced marriage still exists. In truth, this issue has been existed for a long time, but had been neglected until it was brought out in recent years. According to a United Nations expert, Ms. Yakin Ertürk, who has visited to many of the regions, “Traditional practices, such as forced marriages, domestic violence, and denial of reproductive rights, often play a key role in suicides of women and girls in Southeast and Eastern Turkey, while the authorities often do not implement protective laws, (Ref. 5).” The BBC news once revealed this issue on 28 Sep 2006, “Some 300 forced marriages are reported in the UK annually.” The Home Office secretary, Mr. John Reid said. (Ref. 1) And the BBC video news of 3 Dec 2006 showed that, “A rising number of women are committing suicide in Afghanistan to escape forced marriages and domestic violence. Some women have taken their lives by setting themselves on fire.” (Ref. 2) In fact, it is not only the Middle East and UK has a problem with forced marriages; similarly, Taiwan also has this problem that we have been ignored for a long time. Some forced marriages are rooted in Chinese tradition and culture, and some cases are caused by the financial reasons, but no matter what factors have contributed to forced marriages, the suicide caused by inhuman forced marriage can be prevented by making a specific law. In addition to the suicide, we have to consider the domestic violence in forced marriages and the deleterious influence on the younger generations, because this will definitely create potential damages to our society. ~To be continued~ Reference: Ref. 1 : BBC http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/politics/5388612.stm Access date: 9 Jan. 2007 Ref. 2 : BBC Video news by Matt Prodger.
