1. 以道佐人主者,不以兵強天下,其事好還。
用天道輔佐君主以德治國的官員,不主張用武力強臨天下,因為他知道凡事都有報應。
A minister who follows the Word of God to assist the ruler treats people with justice and refuses to use forces to pursue hegemony; for he knows there is a consequence.
2. 師之所處,荊棘生焉。
軍隊侵襲之處必然受損,導致田畝荒蕪荊棘叢生。
Places invaded by troops will be devastated and desolated causing brambles to spread out.
3. 大軍之後,必有凶年。
經過大軍摧残,凶災之年必定接踵而來。
After hit by a powerful army, years of mishaps will come.
4. 善者果而已,不敢以取強。
公義善良的君王用兵是為了防衛,不是為了稱霸或強佔敵人的土地。
A righteous king uses military for defense not to pursue hegemony or to occupy enemy’s territory.
5. 果而勿矜,果而勿伐,果而勿驕,果而不得已,果而勿強。
戰勝後不矜誇,擊敗敵人時不侵占,勝利後不驕縱,好讓世人知道攻擊是不得已的防衛,不是以強凌弱稱霸世界。
Not to be insolent, not to encroach, and not to become arrogant after defeating the instruder, let the world know that military actions are for defense instead of becoimg a superpower.
6. 物壯則老,謂之「不道」。
凡自以為強壯的人都會衰老的快,這是不遵循天道的後果。
Whoever fancying strength will weaken himself, it is a result of not following the Word of Heaven.
7.「不道」早已。
違反天道的工價就是加速滅亡。
The wage of not following the Word of Heaven is quick death.

【注】其事好還…唐.陸希聲在《道德真經傳》裡解釋説:「夫以道輔人主者,當以德服人心,不以甲兵之力取強於天下。何者?取強於人,人必惡之。天下之人惡之,則天下之兵加之矣。故我取強於人,人亦取勝於我。出乎己者,反乎己,是以其事好還復焉。」
必有凶年…南朝齊.顧歡在《道德真經注疏》裡解釋説:「天應之以惡氣,則害五穀,五穀盡,則傷人。」
善者…公義又善於用兵的君王。
果…戰果、戰勝敵人。
不道…不行道、不遵守天道。
