第二篇：作戰 (Waging War)

1. 孫子曰：凡用兵之法，馳車千駟，革車千乘，帶甲十萬，千里饋糧，則內外之費，賓客之用，膠漆之材，車甲之奉，日費千金，然后十萬之師舉矣。

孫子說：出兵作戰時軍方必須擁有足夠的戰備物資，這些包括
　千輛輕型戰車，
　千輛重型戰車，
　十萬武裝齊全的官兵，
　能輸往到千里之外的糧草，
　並且還要有供給前線後方軍隊內外的開銷，
　如招待賓客的費用，
　維修武器的工具和材料，
　保養盔甲和戰車的設施。
這些每天都要耗費千金以上。
然而必須有了這些資源和配備，十萬官兵才能開往到前線。

Sun Tzu said: To fight a war requires the military prepare enough 　armaments and supplies, 
　one thousand light chariots, 
　one thousand heavy chariots, 
　one hundred thousand well-armed soldiers, 
　sufficient provisions able to deliver to thousand miles away, 
　and the budgets to be spent in and out, 
　such as the expenditure for official receptions, 
　supplies and tools for weapons maintenance, 
　facilities for armor and chariots service.
All these will add up to one thousand ounces of gold every day.
However only when these requirements are met so the one hundred thousand soldiers can be dispatched to the front line.

2. 其用戰也貴勝，久則鈍兵挫銳，攻城則力屈，久暴師則國用不足。

作戰的原則是講求速戰速捷，拖太久官兵就會疲憊不堪、銳氣受挫，攻城時士氣必然衰竭，長久對外作戰更會造成國內資源的不足。

When engaging in a war the object is to win rapidly, a protracted battle will make soldiers exhausted and demoralized. They will have no strength to lay siege to a city. If the war is further protracted, it will lead to a shortage of national resources.

3， 夫鈍兵挫銳，屈力殫貨，則諸侯乘其弊而起，雖有智者，不能善其后矣。故兵聞拙速，未睹巧之久也。

一旦官兵因久戰而精疲力竭、銳氣受損，軍力會下滑，資源也會耗盡，其他諸侯會趁對方衰弱時攻擊，此時再足智多謀的將帥也難以善後。因此在實戰中，我只聽說弱兵無法速戰速捷的例子，但從未看過用絕招妙計能做持久戰的。

Once the army is exhausted and demoralized, military strength will be weakened, and resources will be depleted. Other feudal barons will rise up to take advantage of the weakness and attack. Then not even a wise and able commander can avert the crisis. Thus I have heard that weak army cannot have a rapid victory in war, but have not seen clever and trick tactics can endure prolonged warfare.

4. 夫兵久而國利者，未之有也。故不盡知用兵之害者，則不能盡知用兵之利也。

從來沒有一個國家可以從長期的征戰中獲利。因此，不去全面認識戰爭帶來的禍害，就無法完全理解如何在戰場上設計良策取得勝利。

No country had ever benefitted from long-term warfare. Thus, he who not thoroughly knowing the damage from war will not fully understand how to develop favorable means to win in battlefield.

5. 善用兵者，役不再籍，糧不三載；取用于國，因糧于敵，故軍食可足也。

善於指揮作戰的將領，不重複徵兵，不多載糧草。官兵們攜帶國內配備的盔甲和武器，糧草則設法從敵營中奪取，如此軍中就會有充足的糧食。

A master general does not call for a second draft, neither will he load extra war supplies. Soldiers carry their armor and weapons from home, but provisions can be stripped from enemy, thus the military will have abundant foods.
