第一篇: 始計 (1-5)
Chapter１: Strategic Planning

1. 孫子曰：兵者，國之大事，死生之地，存亡之道，不可不察也。

孫子說：戰爭乃是國家大事，它牽涉到百姓的生死，關係到國家的存亡，所以為政者必須謹慎去審查、研究和評估。

Sun Tzu said: War is a vital issue to the nation. It is concerned with peoples life and death, and related to national security and destruction. Therefore the governor has to cautiously invetsigate, study and evaluate.

2. 故經之以五，校之以計，而索其情：
一曰道，二曰天，三曰地，四曰將，五曰法。

然而在戰場上要遵循五項規則，擬定戰術計劃時必須時時加以校正，面對新的戰況必須透過深思熟慮隨機應變，這五項規則包括：
一是道，二是天，三是地，四是將，五是法。

However, there are five rules to follow in the battlefield, keep updating when determine tactics, keep correcting with deliberation when face new conditions. These five rules are: 
(1) Morality
(2) Heaven
(3) Earth
(4) Commander
(5) Law

3. 道者，令民于上同意者也，可與之死，可與之生，民不詭也。

(1) 道：指道德或道統，是政府和人民共同確認的信念以及可以為其同生共死的意識，在此之下，他們遇見任何險阻都不懼怕。

(1) Morality: means virtue or orthodoxy that is the common faith and consciousness co-avowed by government and people, and that they will live and die for without fear.

4. 天者，陰陽、寒暑、時制也。

(2) 天：代表日夜之時辰、陰晴之氣候、寒暑之冷熱、以及季節之變換。

(2) Heaven: represents day or night time, cloudy or clear weather, cold or hot condition, and seasonal alternation.

5. 地者，高下、遠近、險易、廣狹、死生也。

(3) 地：代表地形之高低、距離敵陣之遠近、地勢之危險或安全、戰場之大小、以及地理條件對勝利敗亡的影響。

(3) Earth: stands for the elevation of landform, the distance away from enemy, terrains prone to danger or security, the area size of battlefield, and the geographic setting likely to win or lose.
