憶年十五心尚孩， As a carefree youngster of fifteen,
健如黃犢走復來。 I was like a strong, restless calf.
庭前八月梨棗熟， When pears and dates ripened in August
一日上樹能千回。 I picked them from the trees countless times.
即今倏忽已五十， In a flash, now I am fifty
坐臥只多少行立。 More sitting and lying, less standing and walking.
強將笑語供主人， Forcing smiles in front of my helpers
悲見生涯百憂集。 I concealed all my misery and grief.
入門依舊四壁空， Four bare walls were still the same
老妻睹我顏色同。 My wife also bore a melancholic expression.
痴兒不知父子禮， Only my naive kid cared no manners
叫怒索飯啼門東。 Angrily demanding food in the kitchen.
PS. My translation is barely a piece of poem at all. But I would like to show you how Mr. Du, and numerous others. suffered from the war. Dear fellow islanders, do you really ignore the trend and want a war? |
