In late 50s there had been occassional air combats across Taiwan Strait, and ROC air force acquired an overwhelming victory over PLA by an unbelievably low battle loss, say 1 vs. 31, in total.  Those fighter pilots were all the heros, or the superstars to islanders, especially to young kids.

The ratio may be real, but the fact behind the scene is cruel.  Attached below is a telltale match of the imbalance on the skies between PLA and US air force during Vietnam War, but the result is different.
