Yesterday when I was telling you how badly Ms. Zong Caiyi, the short-lived former minister of Economy, was unable to to cope with the situation against the fusillade of sharp questions from legislators at Legislation Yuan, suddenly I recalled an very embarrasing scene that she eventually uttered "I love Taiwan" (something like that) to a question of "Since you are entirely ignorant about economy of Taiwan, what else do you really know?" When DPP was just an opposition party, they always cited a famous western idiom of "Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel" to accuse KMT's patriotic education and propaganda. An erstwhile colleague of mine, a diehard Taidu advocate, once complained to me that in Taiwan as long as a man chanted "Long live, ROC" (or "Long live, President Chiang" would even be better) everyday, he would "have food to eat with". Well, that colleague of mine had done much better now under the auspices of DPP, and I wondered if he "acquired" what'd he got by chanting "I love Taiwan" everyday. Patriotism is a good virtue, but when will the idiom "Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel" apply? Well, when KMT and DPP accuse each oher like the pot is calling the kettle black. |
