Recently sexual harassment, a world-wide existence, became a hot topic in Taiwan. I am not interested in how did the topic arise, but I do know where had sexual harassment of Taiwanese style come from: two basic elements, the remaining relic from Japanese occupation and the local alcohol culture. Some Taiwanese "big men" inherited extreme male chauvinism from Jap, and they generally regarded women as their adjuncts or even playthings only. They barely had any idea of treating women fairly and respectfully like human beings of equal right and status. If they were under the influence of alcohol during feasts, most likely they might reveal their true nature to offend whoever the women by his side vebally, and/or, stimulated by Dutch courage, even take liberties with those hapless victims. I may be a little paranoid about this, but I did witness how Japs acted after drinking. I also heard an appalling sexual harassment, from reliable sources, regarding a superior I used to work with. a typical guy of Jap proclivity. One evening at a karaoke bar after finishing a drinking feast, he started to make advances to famale inferior. Totally without scruple, he groped her, even try to unbutton her in front of all colleagues in public. At last several male colleagues stopped him, while another female colleagues escorted the victim out of the bar and called her family to pick her up. My colleagues later told me the very next day back to office, that wolf pretended nothing had happened. For crying out loud, I hoped it was not true, but it was.
