Under current circumstances, Taiwan has had no fear of the threats from foreign countries like America, Japan, Vietnam, Philippines, and so on.  You may say the biggest "national" threat is from China's Mainland; on the contrary, it's been her who pretects Taiwan all the time.  Ironic, isn't it?  But it's true; think of it!

Since Taiwan is absolutely no match with China's Mainland at all, any unnecessary expenditure on armed forces will be a squander of money, which will definitely edge off other useful items in the distribution of limited national income.  The catastophic earthquake took place at Hualian gave Taiwan a salutary warning.

There are many things, other than US junk weapons, will bring people of Taiwan real welfare and safety in this disaster-stricken, resource-deficient island.  For example, we should do something to improve seismic and typhoon warning, or even forecast.  We should spend more money to accelerate the plan of gentrification to prevent impending disasters from happening again.

Dear islanders, just open your eyes and broaden your vision.  Think what the real "national" security is.
