December 13, tomorrow, eighty years ago, Japanese troop broke into Nanjing, the capital of Nationalist China. Then the story of "The Rape of Nanjing" began: bestial Jap soldiers started to massacre Chinese POWs, slaughter innocent civilians including newborn babies, and rape women unscrupulously, let alone other acts of vanalism; and the atrocities lasted as long as six weeks. The genocide claimed as many as three-hundred thousand lives, though later Japan mentioned it in its history books as an "incident" only. Rape of Nanjing had been just one of the conspicuous injuries that Japan had inflicted upon China and her people since September18, 1931, throughtout the end of Resistence War on August, 1945. Nowadays China has become the second largest economy powerhouse and one of the military juggernauts in the world; besides, China always demands that Japan has to face "historical fact" as one of the prerequisites in restoring normal relationship between two countries, why Japan still doesn't want to admit its wrongdoings during Sino-Japanese War? The answer is quite simple. In post-industrialization era, Japan, a medium-sized island country without resources, has stood little chance to emulate a likewise industrialized, self-sufficient and unified modern China again. Under this circumstance, once Japan shows compuction towards China, that means it has to accept the fact that Japan will return to the political status during the long pre-industrial age as a pliant neighbor to China, which is an inconvenient reality it is yet to accept. But I think Japan has already known better, though it is not consigned to, that if it dares challange China again, even under the auspices of US, China will definitely settle the scores with it once for all. |
