10月的台灣還是各地都很熱, 紛紛創下百年以來的高溫. 在美股股市裡, 每年10月份總會讓人又拿1987年10月19的黑色星期一, 來和現在的狀況比較. 那一天我在Pine Street的NYIF上課. 只看到老師進進出出教室, 非常慌張. 他說股市崩盤了, 他也無心上課. 其實那時候我也沒法感同身受, 因為年輕也沒玩什麼股票. 到了下午收盤, 這個下跌成了美股史上最大的跌幅. 隔天下午在華爾街上的書店, 買了一本書 – How to make money on Wall Street. (如何在華爾街賺錢), 在排隊等付錢的時候, 後面的老美笑著問我說這是不是新的版本.

上禮拜我看到這一篇文章 - Six similarities between today and 1987, when the Dow plummeted 23% in one day. 作者認為美股有可能朝向另外一個崩盤, 在保持投資的時候(remaining invested), 還是要保護自己.  30年前的10月, 他有數百萬的股票投資, 其他的人也都是如此, 而且大家都賺錢(making money). 在作者另外連結的檔案表格中, 他提到現在的美股和1987年黑色星期一, 有六個相似之處, 包括現在越來越多的被動型ETF投資組合 (rise of passive ETF investing), 如同1987年的投資組合的保險避險措施(portfolio insurance), 運用衍生性商品如期貨以及選擇權. 但是這些都沒辦法保護投資人, 反而加速賣壓(accelerate selling). 作者提到的其他因素還包括: 非常看多的氣氛(very bullish sentiment), 漲勢欲罷不能 (Market rise seems unstoppable.), 市值已經很高(high valuation), 還有上揚的利率和獲利(rising interest rates and earnings). 在這種背景下, 美股整體而言(collectively)是處在歷史高檔區域, 都是投資人應該要來深思(ponder)的問題. 雖然歷史並不一定會重演, 但是也要在歷史中學習.

註: 歷史本身會重複(History will repeat itself.)這個論點, 應該主要是技術派分析師所認同的, 在什麼形態完成下, 會延伸出什麼程度的後續波段. 當然這一篇主要是以相同的月份來做討論. 另外一個時常聽到的市場術語 - 這次不一樣 (This time is different.), 則是可以拿來反駁歷史重複論.

註: 平心而論, 我們在寫英文文章的時候, 除了單字以外, 時間和數字的描述, 其實也有一定的困難, 台灣的教科書這方面應該比較少提到. 這篇文章裡面, 如果仔細看, 有很多描述時間點的用詞, 可以多注意一下, 比如說在上面的英文段落中, 作者用三種方法來說30年前和今天的時間對比 - 介於現在和 1987年(between today and 1987), 30年前的這個月(It was 30 years ago this month.), 30年以後(Three decades on) .. 這也是我為什麼po這一篇文章的 一個動機.
