Taiwan Association of Machinery Industry (TAMI) suggests that Taiwan should let the NT dollar devalue to NT$32 against the greenback in one fell swoop, in order to enable Taiwan’s machine tool makers to stay afloat in competing with rivals from Japan and South Korea. Media notes that in YTD, the Japanese yen depreciated by 25.8% to a 24-year low, as compared with the NT dollar by 11.6%.

上面這一段是週末的中文新聞, 我摘錄成英文, 再翻成中文給大家看. 裡面我用到 ''one fell swoop, 一次性", 也就是直接地讓台幣貶到32元. 這個片語拆開來分析:

swoop 可當名詞, 不及物動詞和及物動詞, 表示"俯衝, 飛撲, 猛撲, 突然襲擊".

* The hawk swooped down and seized a rabbit. 老鷹突然向下猛撲,抓住了兔子.

* Undercover police swooped on three houses in the city at 6.00 this morning. 今天早上六點, 便衣警察突擊搜查了城裡的三間房子。

* G-7 swoops into currency market and agrees to a concerted effort to drive down the yen. 七大工業國衝入貨幣市場, 並且同意一個協調過的努力來貶值日幣. (這個句子用swoop, 意思延伸等於是說急急忙忙 rush, 或者是前擁後簇, 倉促行動scramble.)

至於片語 one fell swoop是指"一舉, 一下子, 一次直接地”. 等於英文的 all at the same time全在同一時間, all at once 一次全部, in a single action 在一個單一動作中. 這個片語讓人迷惑的地方是這個字fell, 它是古字, 表示可怕, 恐怖, 令人驚慌的. 一開始是莎士比亞在馬克白的劇作中提到, 他是說一隻可怕的老鷹俯衝下來殺掉一對母子. (動作是很迅速的 swift). 也就如此成為成語, 不過現在是比較溫和的含義, 沒有那種可怕, 恐怖的意思, 在商業上常看到. 因為網路上例句很多, 這裡就不多寫了.

* All our problems were solved at one fell swoop. 所有我們的問題一下子全都解決了.

這裡我要再提一個單字swoon, 跟上面的swoop很容易令人搞混. swoon 可以當名詞和不及物動詞, 表示昏厥, 昏倒, 狂喜, 心醉神迷.

* The young girls swooned when they saw their favorite pop singer. 年青的姑娘們看到她們最喜歡的流行歌星時都心醉神迷.

* The audience swooned with delight. 觀眾欣喜若狂.

但是在商業上, swoon 是代表一個(明顯的)價格下跌. 網路上說它是俚語, 不過我覺得這個字已經是很常用到了. 跟swoon相比, 要注意的是swoop雖然是指俯衝, 在商業上却沒有用來形容下跌.

* A late swoon erased a day-long stock rally. 尾盤的急殺把一整天的漲勢都吃掉了.

* Global stocks swoon again. 全球股市再次重挫.
