We start with a fun story:
Jamie and Alex run into each other at a bookstore and stop to chat.
So running into each other means
meeting by accident, right?
That’s right, and Jamie says,
“Hey Alex, long time no see! Where’s your son, Mark?”
Long time no see is a great phrase you probably already know what it means,
but let’s review it right now.
That’s right, it’s an expression you use
when you haven’t seen someone in a while,
or it’s been a while since you last met up.
So, long time no see.
He says,
“Where’s your son, Mark?”
And then he mentions that his own son,
Tommy, is over in the electronics section.
He says,
“I’m sure he’d love to see Mark.”
Electronics are things that use electricity to work.
That’s right. We just learned about that word electronics in the Language Lab.
And we use this to talk about a place in a store
that is selling electronics, right?
The electronics section.
We read on here,
“I’m sure he’d love to see Mark.”
I’m assuming that Tommy and Mark are friends,
but it sounds like Mark is not with his dad.
No, he’s not out.
He is at home.
His dad says,
Mark is at home playing Fantasy Blade,
a new online game I allowed him to download.
Okay, Fantasy Blade.
Fantasy means something pretend, basically a pretend world,
and his dad says he’s having a blast.
Okay, having a blast means enjoying yourself.
But we use this expression a lot in English.
That’s right.
If you’re having a blast,
you are having fun.
You’re enjoying yourself.
You could say, The kids had a blast playing in the snow.
That means they were really enjoying themselves.
But there are a few words that we want to look at before
we continue on with this article,
because there are certain words that we use to talk about online games.
As John said, fantasy means something pretend,
blade is a kind of sword.
I’ve seen this word blade a lot of times in video game titles.
What we see here,
this phrase online game, okay?
An online game is really any type of game that you play online, right?
That’s right, and almost always,
there are other players involved.
You could describe a lot of video games
that have an online connection.
You need an internet connection to play them,
but specifically,
we’re talking about games here
that you interact with other players as part of the game.
That’s right, and we also see this word download as well,
which makes me think maybe he
could be using a phone to play this game as well.
Our article doesn’t really say.
When you download something,
like an app or a game,
that means you’re able to use it on your phone
or on your desktop.
That’s right.

Yeah, so if you’re monitoring something,
it means you’re checking on it to make sure it’s doing okay.
Sometimes monitors make sure people follow the rules in school.
There’s a special role in school
we call it the hall monitor.
I think it’s a little bit different in different cultures, but sometimes you have one student who makes sure the others get to class on time, and they are called a monitor as a noun.
That’s right.
So here’s another way you could use this in a sentence, friends: "The teacher monitored the class while they did their assignment." The idea here is that the teacher isn’t just letting the class do their assignment by themselves; she’s making sure that they’re actually working on that assignment.
But Jamie says he’s not sure he would let Tommy do that. He’d play all day and never do anything constructive.
Another great word for you to know, friends: constructive.
Absolutely! Constructive means to make a positive difference or to actually build something. So, we say if something is not constructive, then is it even worth the time doing?
Here’s an example of how you could use constructive in a sentence: "We often talk about constructive criticism. Constructive criticism is necessary for growth. You can only grow if you know where you can improve."
Here, we’re talking about constructive being something worthwhile, something worth doing.
But Alex says his son will be fine. "I told him he can play for an hour, and then he has to do something else."
So it sounds like he has set this standard or boundary for his son surrounding online games.
That’s right. And then he says, "But you know, a little gaming here and there can be good for you."
Here, we get a very important verb: gaming. Gaming almost always means video gaming when you just use it by itself in modern English. We’re not talking about playing board games here or playing sports. When you see gaming, we are talking about online or video games.
Here’s another example of how you could use gaming in a sentence: "The gaming industry has been huge in the last 10 years, and it is growing bigger and bigger."
That’s right! Now, this word game was interesting as a noun. The game itself is the thing you play, but if you read older English books and someone mentions wild game, you know what they’re talking about?
They’re talking about animals that can be hunted.
That’s right. Wild game... I guess before video games, people hunted animals more for fun. What do you think about that?
Well, now comes the real question: Is gaming good for you?
What does Jamie say?
Well, Jamie says, "Good for you? You must be joking."
"You must be joking" is a great phrase to use, friends, when you really don’t agree with the other person. It’s a way to tell them you can’t be serious about this. That sounds like a joke!
Yeah, "You must be joking." So if your friend tells you, "I’m going to get up at three o’clock every morning and do my homework," you can tell them, "You must be joking! That’s way too early."

Well, I don’t play video games much anymore. I’m just too busy as a dad and with work. You’ve got to be careful with the time you spend on video games, as we all know.
But I do like multiplayer games because they’re very competitive. So it can be fun to have that extra challenge of competing against a human brain rather than just a computer program.
That’s a good point. What about you, friends? What kind of games do you prefer playing? It’s a good thing to talk about in English.
But we see here that Mark plays Fantasy Blade with people from all over the world. And there was something positive that came from this. What was that, John?
Well, his dad says it even caused him to start learning Spanish. So he’s learning a different language. That’s one of the great things about learning a new language: you can talk to friends from other countries.
So, okay, we have one reason maybe that multiplayer games could be a good thing. But how does our conversation continue?
Jamie talks about something that his son has run into before, and it’s not pleasant. He says, "That’s great, but what about cyberbullies?"
Here’s another good word for us to know when it comes to online gaming: cyberbully.
What is a cyberbully?
Oh, okay. A cyberbully... I looked up the definition. It is someone who is intentionally aggressive online. So oftentimes, it’s just someone who says mean things to try to hurt you or make you feel bad online.
You know, I was cyberbullied on a video game a couple of times.
You were?
Yeah, there was a multiplayer game, and if you did bad, your teammates often cyberbullied you. It was no fun.
This is true. It’s happened to me before, too. I didn’t play online games for very long, but there was a period of time before I had kids that I tried to play online with my husband, and I was really bad. I was also cyberbullied. People make fun of you and complain about you being on their team.
So I don’t know. I haven’t had a super great experience with multiplayer games either.
Yeah, and sometimes the experience is really bad. We get the example from our pretend story here: Tommy used to like playing Dream Fighter 2 until another player started calling him names and swearing at him.
So these are two ways of saying using bad language. Calling someone names is like telling them mean things about them.
How would you describe that?
It’s like calling someone bad words or calling them names that are intentionally used to make fun of them. So that means they’re probably telling him maybe he was stupid or a bad player.
And then also we see swearing here. We learned about that in the Language Lab, and swearing is the idea of using dirty words.
And please, never swear. I get so sad when I hear my English students use a bad word that they picked up from online. Swearing does not make you seem smart, and it can actually lose you a lot of opportunities, besides hurting other people.
But it’s true. Another thing about online bullying is that sometimes really old people are playing with really young people, and they bully each other. It’s especially bad when young people hear these things that can hurt them.
What happened to Tommy?
Well, he was so upset that he didn’t leave his room for a whole day. Cyberbullying does have consequences, friends.
Alright, well, we’re going to learn more from this story later. Right now, it’s time for today’s Fun Fact.

First of all, the idea of reporting bad behavior.
If there’s a certain player who’s continuing to bother you over and over again, or they’re really using some very violent language against you or saying things they shouldn’t, you can block them.
You can make it so that you don’t have to play games with them, and they can’t see your profile.
That’s right, you can use the word block outside of talking about video games.
Blocking can mean to stop something, right?
You can block a soccer ball, but here, blocking is very specific.
Like you say, preventing someone from seeing you or contacting you.
Blocking can be different depending on the game, but Jamie doesn’t really think that this is the solution.
He doesn’t. He says, "Well, I don’t want to risk him being bullied again."
You saw that word risk in the Language Lab.
Let’s talk a little bit more about that term, okay?
To risk means to put yourself in a position where there is some kind of danger.
We normally say taking a risk.
That’s right, but this isn’t the only problem. Jamie says he would prefer to have Tommy do something physical outside, like play basketball.
Now, when we are using the word physical here, we are saying it like this because it is relating to the body instead of the mind.
So, Jamie’s point is, he doesn’t want to have him just sit in front of a computer and play games.
He wants him to be moving his body and exercising.
That’s right! If you’ve been in school, you might have heard this phrase PE (Physical Education).
We use that in the U.S. to describe physical education—going outside and working out or learning sports as part of a school class.
So, yeah, his dad wants him to do something physical, like basketball.
Alex agrees. He says, "That is important for good health."
Mark loves playing basketball with Tommy, but he also says gaming has helped with that.
What? Well, he says that gaming has helped him with that too.
He says it’s improved his hand-eye coordination.
Very interesting!
So, friends, of course, if you improve something, it means that you’ve made it better.
And what has he improved in this situation?
Your hand-eye coordination is the way your hands and your sight work together to be able to do things, especially things that require speed and accuracy.
So, throwing things is a classic example of needing good hand-eye coordination.
Or the game of ping pong—it takes a ton of hand-eye coordination.
You know, a lot of times, people with poor hand-eye coordination don’t enjoy playing sports because maybe they can’t kick the ball straight or they run into other people.
It’s more difficult for them to do it.
It really is!
But you know what?
It’s important to do physical things so that your hand-eye coordination gets better.
But Alex says that the hand-eye coordination of his son has improved.
Jamie, however, says, "Really?"
When you say really in this way, it’s kind of like asking a question with a certain attitude.
Usually, the attitude here is that you don’t believe what the other person has just said.
In fact, you really doubt that it is true.
Really, is that what it means?

So, we talked earlier about the use of the word physical, right?
If something is physical, it means that you are doing it with your body, and here, when we use the word mental, we’re talking about doing something with your mind.
Absolutely!
For example, here, some games require you to think fast and find creative solutions to problems.
If something requires you to do something, what does that mean?
Well, if you are required to do something, it means that it is demanded by something, especially because of a rule or law.
So these games have rules, right?
And they require you—or demand that you play in a certain way.
Absolutely!
You could even say that certain challenges require you to do things.
You could say, "It was raining outside, which required me to be very careful where I walked and bring an umbrella."
That’s right!
So, we see here that these games are requiring you to find creative solutions to problems.
You could find just normal solutions to problems, of course, but creative solutions are solutions that maybe most people wouldn’t think of or a solution that’s different than the obvious one.
That’s right!
In this case, Mark has become more creative in the way he plans and completes his job around the house.
So he’s using his creativity because he’s been practicing problem solving through games. Okay, what do you think about that?
I think it’s possible to learn how to problem solve because of certain games, but I also think that most games are repetitive enough that you are only going to learn certain types of creative thinking maybe once or twice. And then, as the game moves on, you’re really not learning anything new. So maybe there are some limits to this. And sometimes, because games are so fun in the way they do problem solving, when you’re in the real world, instead of practicing problem solving, you’re thinking about the game. Have you ever experienced that? I know I’ve experienced that before. Right?
That is definitely a possibility. Yeah.
So there are downsides to some of this. Jamie adds, he says, “I know Mark doesn’t stay up all night playing video games, but if you’ve been gaming all night, you can’t think fast.”
Okay, what else does he say? Well, he’s saying here that because some people are staying up all night and spending time playing games instead of sleeping, it’s affecting the rest of their lives. This can be seen here: “I read in an article that said many gamers admit to sacrificing sleep.”
If you admit to something, it means that yes, you say that you did do that, and it’s usually because the thing that you did isn’t a good thing. And they’re admitting to sacrificing their sleep. If you sacrifice something, it means you give it up in exchange for something else. So here, we’re using sleep as the thing that is sacrificed. What else? How else can you use this sentence?
Well, you could sacrifice your time to help others. That means you’re giving away some of your own time and giving it to someone else to do something nice for them.

What does a baseball player need to do? They need to anticipate how the pitcher will throw the ball, get the timing right, and even train the specific ways their bodies turn. The devil is in the details.
So this phrase isn’t really about the devil, is it?
Not that I know of in the phrase. The devil basically represents something bad or a big problem. So, basically, the phrase is saying that the biggest problems can be in the smallest details.
the devil’s in the details 魔鬼藏在細節裡 今天要討論一個大家應該都聽過的用語：the devil’s in the details。
“魔鬼藏在細節裡”，Devil是魔鬼，在這裡代表一件事情所隱藏的關鍵問題。
The devil’s in the details 就是形容如果你要解決問題，你要抽絲剝繭地去看細節，通常產生問題的原因都藏在一些細節當中。
例如在棒球比賽中，如果要打到投手投出來的球，不是只有用力揮棒那麼簡單，而是要注意他投球的姿勢、方向或是速度，才比較能夠打中球。

Online gaming: friend or foe? You can lose track of time when you’re really in the zone. And what about addiction? Did you know that gaming addiction is considered a disorder now?
Wow.
But playing a moderate amount of time still has benefits sometimes. Mark and I play together. Gaming can be a good way to bond with your kids. You should try it.
I think I’d rather bond over a few rounds of badminton.
接著來看形容詞 moderate，意思是適度的。
譬如：This part of the country has moderate temperatures and mild winters.

moderate 也可以當動詞，意思是主持會議或討論。
譬如：Oscar was chosen to moderate the discussion because he was known to be fair.

Okay, friends, it’s time to find out how our lesson is going to end. Alex says, “You really can lose track of time when you’re really in the zone.”
Two great things to talk about in this sentence. First, let’s talk about the idea of losing track of time. Losing track of time is when you stop paying attention to what time it is or how long something has been going on. It’s easy to lose track of time when you’re doing something fun. For example, I really lose track of time when I read a book that I like. I could read for hours and not realize what’s going on around me.
But there’s another phrase we need to talk about here, friends, and that’s the idea of being in the zone. This is the idea of having all of your energy and all your attention exactly on what you’re doing at the time.
That’s right. A zone is a place, but when we say "the zone," we typically mean a place of successfully doing something. So you could say, “He was really in the zone. He kept winning at the game.”
But we have something serious to talk about in this next part, friends. What about addiction? Did you know that gaming addiction is considered a disorder now?
What is an addiction?
John: Addiction is a condition where you cannot stop doing some kind of behavior, typically a destructive behavior. For example, she had an addiction to spending money and ended up going into a lot of debt. The idea, when we are talking about addiction, friends, is that it is causing some type of harmful consequence in some way.
For example, if you are addicted to smoking, that is going to have an impact on your health. If you’re addicted to spending money, that’s going to have an effect on how you live your life because you won’t have money for the things that you need. Here, we’re talking about being addicted to video games, and it’s actually considered a disorder now.
That’s right. Jamie says, “Did you know that gaming addiction is considered a disorder now?” Alex responds. He says, “Wow. But playing a moderate amount of time still has benefits.”
Okay, moderate means a light kind of middle amount, not too much. And I think he makes an okay point: If it’s not an addiction, there’s nothing wrong with video gaming. But it’s important to realize this can take, especially young people, out of society and not help their lives—and even hurt their lives.
That’s right. Alex does say there’s something positive that’s happening here sometimes. He and his son play together. It can be a great way to spend time with your kids. Although you have to remember, parents out there, spending time beside your kids is not the same as spending time face to face with your kids. You gotta make sure that you’re having those deep conversations with them as well.
Jamie says, "Gaming can be a good way to bond with your kids." We saw that word bond in the language lab. It’s a great one. Let’s review it before we move on.
Bond means to make a strong connection with, and it really is important to bond with our kids, as we know. As parents, it’s important to find that time when you’re not distracted.
So Alex says to his friend, “You should try it.” Right? And Jamie says here at the end, “I think I’d rather bond over a few rounds of badminton.”
It’s very interesting that our writer used “a few rounds of” at the end because we do talk about online gaming in this way. You could say you’re going to play a round of a game. That means you’re going to play one game. You could play several rounds in a row, but this is also how we talk about playing badminton as well.
That’s right. There are other games that have rounds, typically, like you say one game where someone wins or loses the round. That is a round you can win or lose as well.
