Eating Hot Pot
Eating hot pot -
例子:We’re eating hot pot tonight.(我們今晚吃火鍋。)
Eating hot pot meal -
Having hot pot -
We’re having hot pot for dinner.(我們晚餐吃火鍋。)

Hello everyone,
Welcome to Let’s Talk in English.
My name is Garrett,
And my name is Esther. Today,
Our topic is food, and the title of our lesson is "Eating Hot Pot."
Yes, eating hot pot, friends.
Do you know what hot pot is? When you take food and boil it
In a pot of hot water or hot soup, we call that hot pot, right?
Hot pot is a popular dish
Or way of eating food in many countries in Asia,
But it’s spreading in popularity,
Right? People all around the world
Like to put the kinds of food they like into this hot pot.
Garrett, can you help us with our reading?
Hot pot is a popular Chinese dish.
It is delicious.
You sit at a table with a pot of hot broth first.
The broth has to boil.
Then you can cook many different things in it.
Many people put seafood and different kinds of meat in hot pot.
Vegetables such as cabbage and corn are delicious in it too.
People also add mushrooms, tofu, and noodles to hot pot.
Take some cooked food from your hot pot with your chopsticks,
Dip it in some sauce, and enjoy. Thanks.
Garrett, this time of the year is
When people especially like to eat hot pot,
Because it is getting cold and windy outside,
And hot pot warms you right up.
It is hot soup with lots of ingredients,
And it’s quite healthy, especially if you add lots
Of vegetables.
We need to go to our "Find It" question.
Our question is: What do you dip the food in?
What do you dip the food in?
Find the answer in today’s lesson now.
It’s time to go over to Sonya with today’s keywords. Susie,
Greg
It’s a popular Chinese dish.
Drag
You sit at a table with a pot of hot broth.
It has to boil first.
Greg,
Do you eat it with chopsticks?
Susie, you have to try the new hot pot place sometime.
Is it good?
Yes, James and I love it. We have to take you there.
Okay, is hot pot a Chinese dish?
Yes, it’s a popular Chinese dish. Tell me about it.
You sit at a table with a pot of hot broth.
We start with Greg
Telling Susie she needs to try food at a new restaurant.
He says it’s a new place that sells hot pot, right?
He says you have to try it. Now, this doesn’t mean she needs to
Or something bad will happen. It
Just means Greg thinks this place is really great
And he wants to recommend it to Susie, right?
And what kind of place is it? Well,
It’s a hot pot restaurant. Earlier,
We talked about what a hot pot is,
And think about hot food in a pot with water or soup.
That’s hot pot, right? Now,
There are a few different ways to eat hot pot.
You might have one big pot in the middle of the table
That everyone uses together,
Or you might just have one small pot for each person, right?
And Susie wants to know more about this restaurant. Is it good?
She’s asking, is the food there delicious?
Greg says it is. He loves to go there with James,
And he says they will take Susie there too. Susie wants to go,
And she asks, "Is hot pot a Chinese dish?"
Here, the word dish is not talking about the plate,
We’re talking about a kind of food.
And yes, it is a kind of food that many people eat in China
And many countries in Asia. Right now,
If you are sitting down with many different kinds of food
On the table to choose from, each of those are a different dish.
So that is what we are talking about here.
Greg says it’s a popular Chinese dish. Things that are popular
Are things that many people enjoy. Susie wants
Greg to tell her more about this restaurant, and she
Uses the sentence,
"Tell me about it." This is a very useful sentence to use
When someone is sharing
And you want to know more exactly. Well,
Greg does tell her more about it.
He says you sit at a table with a pot of hot broth.
A pot is a round thing
That you cook things in, usually over fire.
And broth is another great word for us to know.
Right, the word broth means soup.
Sometimes people will cook this soup from the bones of pork
Or beef.
They might call it pork broth.
Yeah, if you make it with bones,
It’s technically called stock, whereas
If you’re just using vegetables
And meat, you could just call it broth.
Either way, it is a way to start making soup
Because it makes what you cook in it
Have a nice flavor.
So you can sit at a table,
Or you can sit around a table and have hot pot together. Sonia,
Can you help us with these phrases?
Greg
You sit at a table with a pot of hot broth.
本句 sit at a table 指坐在桌前
The girl is sitting at a table and ordering food.
Will everyone please sit down at the table?
My family sat around the table
waiting for dinner.
Thank you, Sonia. Friends,
Do you also like to eat hot pot?
We sure do, and we enjoy taking a break from time to time.
Let’s do that right now. We’ll see you in just a moment.
Let’s Talk in English—ten minutes every day,
Every day, that’s the way. Welcome back! Earlier,
We learned that when you eat hot pot,
You sit at a table with a pot of hot broth.
And there are many different kinds of broth, right?
Often when you go to a hot pot place,
They’ll give you many options for what kind of soup or broth
You would like to have. You might want a plain one,
A spicy one,
Or maybe one that’s vegetarian with no meat involved, right?
My favorite is the tomato broth.
Let’s continue and learn more about hot pot.
Do you cook food in the broth?
Yes, but it has to boil first.
Then you add seafood and different kinds of meat. Yum!
Vegetables, tofu,
And noodles are delicious in hot pot too.
Do you eat it with chopsticks?
Yes, you take cooked food from your pot with your chopsticks,
Dip it in some sauce, and enjoy.
Remember earlier,
Susie asked Greg to tell her about hot pot, and now
She is asking more questions. Yeah,
She wants to know what you do with that broth.
Do you cook food in the broth?
Greg says yes,
But the hot broth has to boil first.
What does it mean to boil?
Well, it means that it gets very hot,
And you see bubbles. Water boils at 100 degrees Celsius.
That’s right.
And when it boils,
You’ll start to see some of that water
Vapor or gas rise up from the soup. Once it’s doing that,
You are ready to start
Throwing other ingredients into your broth.
Right? Greg tells Susie that
You can add seafood and different kinds of meat.
Seafood is food
You find from the ocean,
Like fish, shrimp, and crab.
That’s right, and of course,
You can add different kinds of popular meat,
Like beef, pork, or others.
Let’s go to Sonya
For more of those words that we use to describe meat.
Greg
Then you add seafood and different kinds of meat.
Cow → beef, pig → pork, sheep → mutton.
I had beef for dinner.
Pork is her favorite kind of meat.
Some people don’t like mutton.
Thank you, Sonya. Well,
I agree with Susie,
I also want to say yum,
Because throwing meats into hot pot broth is delicious.
It sure is!
But we don’t just add meat,
Greg continues,
He says that you can also add vegetables, tofu, and noodles,
And they are also delicious in hot pot. Yeah,
All those things really soak up the flavor of the soup,
And they’re nice and filling too, right?
People like to add green leafy vegetables,
Like spinach and bok choy.
Those are popular green vegetables. Well, Susie
Has another question for Greg,
As she’s trying to understand how to eat hot pot.
Do you eat it with chopsticks?
Did you hear the word chopsticks? Yes,
That’s one of our key words. In many countries in Asia,
People use two long sticks. One stick is called a chopstick,
But you need to eat with a pair of chopsticks.
Now, friends,
Do you know how to eat food with chopsticks?
It takes a little bit of practice, but once you know how to do it,
They’re very useful,
Especially when you’re eating noodles. That’s how I feel.
I agree. Do you eat with chopsticks?
That’s today’s calendar phrase:
Do you eat it with chopsticks?
Do you eat it with chopsticks?
Love rice,
Do you eat it with chopsticks?
Yes!
I also love meat.
Do you eat it with chopsticks?
Yes!
I also love seafood.
Do you eat it with chopsticks?
Yes!
But my favorite food is pizza.
Why pizza?
I don’t need chopsticks!
Oh, yeah!
Cool!
Do you eat it with chopsticks?
Do you eat it with chopsticks?
Greg tells Susie that yes,
You take the cooked food from your pot with your chopsticks. Now,
I think this place that Greg is going to is a place
Where everyone has their own pot,
Because when many people are sharing the same pot, usually
There is a big soup ladle or a big spoon people use, yeah,
Or maybe chopsticks that everyone uses together. Well, friends,
I think we’re ready to answer
Our Find It question. What do you dip the food in?
You dip the food in some sauce!
Yes, people add soy sauce
And all kinds of delicious things. They dip the vegetables
And meat in the sauce to enjoy hot pot. Mmm. Well,
Friends,
Let’s look back at what we learned and review our keywords.

Sure! Heres the corrected version with the English grammar fixed and simplified Chinese converted to traditional Chinese, while preserving the original structure:
Hello, friends!
Welcome to Let’s Talk in English. My name is Esther.
And my name is Garrett. Were back with another food lesson, and the name of our lesson is Eating Hot Pot.
Thats right! We are eating hot pot together. It is a popular dish from China, and you can cook many different things when you eat hot pot.
Thats true! You take a pot, you take lots of different kinds of food, and you boil the food in a pot with hot broth.
Thats right! Remember, broth is like a kind of soup. Then, you throw lots of different meats, vegetables, and other things into it that you can eat. And people eat hot pot with chopsticks because many people in Asia use chopsticks. Remember, we talk about a pair of chopsticks because you use two when you eat.
Well, I think hot pot is really popular because you don’t need to spend a lot of time preparing it. You do your own cooking while you eat, right? And you can cook it the way you like it. Some people like to cook the vegetables a little longer to make them softer. Some people don’t like to cook them that long.
That’s right! Well, friends, what we would like is for you to find the answer to our "Find It" question.
Today’s question is:
Who did James enjoy a long weekend with?
Who did James enjoy a long weekend with?
I wonder if it’s someone from work, maybe his friend or old classmate, or maybe his family. Well, we will find out in our lesson today and will learn some new great words.
Here’s Sonya to teach them to us.
James
Fish balls, shrimp, squid, beef, pork dumplings, vegetables, and more.
Sira
Eating hot pot is a perfect time to be social.
There are always so many foods to choose from.
Siri
You get to cook and eat your favorite foods.
I didn’t see you in the office yesterday.
Yeah, I took the day off.
I wanted to enjoy a long weekend with my family.
How was it?
It was great! We had hot pot last night. It was delicious!
How fun!
What did you put in it?
Fish balls, shrimp, squid, beef, pork dumplings, vegetables, and more.
That sounds delicious.
We also put in several kinds of tofu.
We start with Sarah telling James that she didn’t see him at the office yesterday.
Yeah, James was gone, but where was he?
Well, James tells us that he took the day off. If you take a day off, it means you need to be away from work, maybe for vacation, or maybe there’s something you need to do.
Thats right! I took the day off!
Hey, thats today’s calendar phrase:
I took the day off. I took the day off.
I didn’t see you yesterday.
I took the day off.
You weren’t in the office.
I took the day off.
You weren’t at your desk.
I took the day off.
Sigh That makes me sad.
Because I took the day off?
No, because I didn’t!
Oh, haha! Yeah, I took the day off.
When you take the day off, sometimes you take the day off because you are sick, and you might need to go see a doctor. Sometimes it’s because you have some other reasons. We call that a personal leave. Sonia, can you help us explain what take the day off or took the day off means?
James
James
I took the day off.
take off 請假
take sick leave 請病假,
take a personal leave
I will take two weeks off to go to France.
Or: You should take sick leave and go home to rest.
Mary plans to take a personal leave tomorrow.
Mary
Thank you, Sonia.
Friends, did you find the answer to today’s question?
Our question is: Who did James enjoy a long weekend with?
And the answer is: He enjoyed a long weekend with his family.
Friends, hopefully you found that answer right.
And that’s the reason he took the day off—because he wanted to spend time with his family. Now, he wanted to enjoy a long weekend.
Garrett, what does a long weekend mean?
Well, the weekend is Saturday and Sunday, two days that most of us usually have off. A long weekend, though, is a three or four-day weekend when maybe you have Friday or Monday off from work, so the weekend seems longer.
Right! And James wanted a long weekend because he wanted to be with his family. Sarah asked How was it? and James tells us that he had a great time. In fact, he had hot pot with his family. Ah, yes, I know James enjoys that! He says it was delicious.
But Sarah wants to know more about what they ate, right? She asks, What did you put in it? Well, James says that they put fish balls, shrimp, squid, beef, pork dumplings, vegetables, and more.
That sounds delicious.
We also heard the word dumpling.
A dumpling is when you take flour, wrapping, or skin, and you put something inside. Or maybe it’s a small piece of meat with a coating. That’s right! And when you put it in that hot pot, you can cook it until it’s ready to eat. Finally, they also put in several kinds of tofu.
Sounds like a great meal!
Well, friends, it’s time for us to take a break. We’ll be right back just after this.
Let’s Talk in English – Ten minutes every day!
Every day, that’s the way!
Welcome back! We heard James say that their family had tofu in their hot pot. Tofu is very healthy, and there are many different kinds people add to hot pot, yeah?
Tofu starts with some beans, but many processes happen until tofu takes many different shapes, sizes, and flavors.
Let’s continue and learn more about hot pot!
What do you like most about hot pot?
I like chatting with everyone at the table as we eat. Eating hot pot is a perfect time to be social.
Exactly! The food is always nice and hot too. I like that. Haha!
That’s because you cook and eat everything on the spot. And there are always so many foods to choose from, right?
You get to cook and eat your favorite foods.
Now, Sarah asked James an important question. She asked, What do you like the most about hot pot?
Yeah, what does James like most about hot pot?
Well, he says it’s chatting with everyone at the table as they eat. So it’s not the actual food they’re eating, but the environment and experience of being together, right? When you’re chatting, you’re talking about different things, and everyone is having a good time.
Sarah agrees. She says, Eating hot pot is a perfect time to be social.
It’s usually not a dish that you eat by yourself. It’s something you do with friends. It is social! Social things are things you do with others. You might even say you’re going to a social event. That’s an event where people talk and get to know each other.
Right, or maybe you’re a social person. You like to meet people and be around others.
James agrees with Sarah. He says, The food is always nice and hot too. I like that. Hmm, yum!
Sarah continues and says, That’s because you can cook and eat everything on the spot.
If something is on the spot, it is right where you are, right in front of you. You can see it, and James likes the fact that you can choose many different kinds of food.
When you choose something, then you decide what you want. What you choose is called your choice.
Yeah, sometimes at hot pot, there are places you can go to grab the foods you want. You can choose whatever you’d like, and you get to cook and eat your favorite foods. Your favorite foods are the foods you like the most, because you can choose what you want to add in and what you want to eat.
Well, what is your favorite thing to eat at hot pot, Esther?
I think it is seafood. I really like shrimp and crab, so I like to add seafood to my hot pot. How about you, Garrett?
Hmm, I think it’s probably eating beef. It tastes great with the soup, but I also enjoy having a little bit of the soup by itself.
Me too! Especially after you cook all the vegetables and meat, the broth changes flavor, and you can drink the soup.
You get to choose what you want in a hot pot. Well, you get to choose what you want!
And we get to learn more about this with Sonya and Sira!
Sonya
You get to cook and eat your favorite foods.
片語 get to do something 表示有機會做某事的意思。
Helen gets to play with the band this weekend.
Helen
Or: He gets to practice with the basketball team.
They get to meet a famous movie star.
Thank you so much, Sonya!
It’s always great when you get to choose what you want.
When you get to do something, you are allowed to, or you have the opportunity to do that thing, right? You can make your own choice.
No one is telling you that you have to do it, like homework. Homework is not something you get to choose. You just need to do it!
Thats right!
Well, friends, right now we get to review our keywords together.
Here is your first keyword:
Squid
Squid

It’s a little cold today, so I think eating hot pot would be nice.
I’m asking some friends to join me.
It’s so much fun to eat hot pot and talk, don’t you think so?
Hot pot is a popular traditional Chinese dish.
It’s perfect for sharing with family and friends.
It’s a fun way to enjoy a meal together, especially during cold weather.
Everyone sits around a table with a pot of hot broth in the center.
When the broth begins to boil, people begin to add their favorite things to the pot.
There is a wide variety of food to choose from. Many people put seafood, fish balls, and different kinds of meat in hot pot.
Vegetables such as cabbage and corn are delicious in it too.
People also add other fresh vegetables, mushrooms, tofu, and noodles to hot pot.
As everything in the pot cooks, people begin to take things from the pot with chopsticks.
The food is then dipped in a sauce made from soy sauce, sesame oil, garlic, and chili paste.
Some people put a raw egg or peanut powder in the sauce too.
At the end of the meal, everyone enjoys drinking the broth. It’s delicious!
Alright, I found five friends who want to eat hot pot.
I’m going to meet them at a hot pot restaurant in about 30 minutes.
I can’t wait! When the weather is cold, hot pot is one of my favorite meals.
I hope you can enjoy hot pot with some friends too.
That’s all for today. See you next time on Jack’s File. Bye!
