There are many good phrases that use the word "hang." When you hang up on someone, you end a phone call suddenly.

You do not finish the conversation. When you hang out with people, you spend time with them.

Today, Julie and Greg are talking in the studio, and at the beginning, Julie doesn’t look too well.

Now, friends, did you hear the word "hung"? That’s the past tense of the word "hang."

If you hang up on someone, it means that you end a phone call.

Yes, but usually not in a kind way. When you hang up on someone, you might still be in the middle of the conversation, but you might be angry.

So you put the phone down or click the button to end the call.

Right, and that’s why Greg asks Julie, "Are you mad at them?"

Greg doesn’t know if it’s a girl or a boy, a man or a woman. That’s why he’s using "them" instead of "him" or "her."

Well, Julie says she’s not mad. She’s just disappointed.

Yeah, "hang out" is a great phrase that we use all the time. It doesn’t mean you need to be doing something important; you’re just enjoying time with someone that you like, right?

I might tell Garrett, "Garrett, would you and your wife like to hang out with our family this weekend?" And he might say, "I would love to."

Well, Julie says now her friend never has time for her, so she’s not hanging out with this friend very often.

Now, Greg wants to find out how Julie feels about this friendship, so he asks, "But you want to hang on to the friendship, right?"

And so here we hear this phrase "hang on to." Now here we’re not talking about hanging on to something physical, like a tree or a pole; we’re talking about hanging on to a friendship or not letting go of it.

If you hang on to a friendship, you keep it going, right? You can also hang on to some memories or some things that make you think about that person.

Well, Julie tells us that she is not ready to hang it up yet. Hanging up here means to give up or to say something is over.

Yeah, think about a towel that’s in your hands. When it’s in your hands, you’re using it, but you hang it up in the bathroom when you’re done using it.

It’s just like that. When you hang something up, you’re done with it; you kind of give up on it, right?
