我每天早上玩一次淺易的填字遊戲, 前幾天看到一個提示「Frequent punctuation in Emily Dickinson’s poetry」, 答案「emdash」, 填字遊戲不含空格, emdash 是 em dash 的意思 (長的 —) , 我不懂讀英文詩自然不知道這件事, 不過書架上有一本《Collected Poems of Emily Dickinson》( 美國 Avenal Books 出版), 拿下來看個究竟, 哪有什麼 em dash!

先解釋不讀英文詩為何有這本詩集? 話說 1982年的電影《Sophie’s Choice》結尾 Sophie 和男友躺在床上服毒自殺, 一個朋友在睡房的桌上拿起 Sophie 最喜愛的 Emily Dickinson 詩集, 朗誦其中一首《Ample Make This Bed》, 戲院裡聽不完全, 於是買了那本詩集 (因此是書架上唯一的英文詩集) 來參考:

Make this bed with awe;

In it wait till judgment break

Excellent and fair.

Be its mattress straight,

Be its pillow round;

Let no sunrise yellow noise

Interrupt this ground.

這本詩集不只用這一次, 1989 年美國 United Airlines 從 Denver 到 Chicago 的班機途中駕駛完全失去操控能力, 選擇迫降最近的 Sioux City 機場，那天晚間電視新聞有實況錄影, 駕駛只能判斷時機差不多時關掉引擎讓飛機墬地聽天由命，機身高速撞地後翻滾斷成兩節隨之爆炸起火, 意外的是有不少乘客生還. 隔天《L. A. Times》的新聞裡有位生還者說, 當她依指示兩手抱頭埋在兩膝間時腦裡只有 Emily Dickinson 的一首詩並朗誦給記者聽, 我從詩集得知只是開頭四行：

Hope is the thing with feathers

That perches in the soul,

And sings the tune without the words,

And never stops at all,

我因填字遊戲所說上網找到上述兩首詩的真正原文.

不論何種語言, 詩人在何處加何種標點符號, 或者換行, 斷句, 留空等等都是為了在視覺, 語氣和思路上引出某種效果, 如果只為了解大意就算了, 欣賞詩時則不可忽略, Avenal Books 附屬有名的出版社 Random House, 專門重印古典文學作品, 當然是為了賺錢, 不過都是精裝版, 這本詩集還有詩人 George Gesner 的序, 給人不是隨便印印的感覺, Gesner 很可能沒有細看, 出版社的編輯不懂這個道理嗎?
