我很喜愛的美國作家 Joan Didion 以精闢分析美國通俗文化著稱, 2021年去世, 有一部紀念她的紀錄片名為《Joan Didion: The Center Will Not Hold》, 我對她作品的喜愛不足為外人道, 不過這個紀錄片的特別名稱值得一提.
通常名作家的紀錄片應該會引用他們的名句做片名, 但是「The Center Will Not Hold 」卻是取自二十世紀愛爾蘭詩人 William Butler Yeats 的名詩《The Second Coming》. 有何關聯? Didion 1968年的散文集《Slouching Towards Bethlehem》藉用了《The Second Coming》的最後一句做標題, 書的第一頁印了整首詩. 紀錄片的製作人顯然認為用那首詩的另一句「The Center Will Not Hold」可以適當的描述他從 Didion 作品得到的領悟, 我如今再看到「The center will not hold」這幾個字時卻有與 Didion 無關的感觸.
話說 1919年第一次世界大戰後, Yeats 環顧世事極端的悲觀寫下《The Second Coming》這首詩, 時隔一百多年, 面對大不相同的世界,「The center will not hold」這一句卻在我心中產生共鳴. 不過乍聽之下好像很嚴重, 其實我對世事的感覺多年來已經近乎麻木, 這只是一時情不自禁的反應而已, 我依習慣記錄某年某月某一日有這件事, 沒有別的意思.
台灣詩人楊渡翻譯「the center will not hold 」成「再無核心可以掌握」, 中國詩人黄福海的翻譯是「中心已無法守住」, 另一中國詩人袁可嘉則譯成「再也保不住中心」. 附原詩與楊渡的翻譯於下作參考.
