電影《星際戰爭》裡的宗師 Yoda 留下不少箴言, 最廣為傳頌的是《Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back》一段對白的最後一句:

Luke: Master, moving stones around is one thing. This is totally different.

Yoda: No. No different. Only different in your mind. You must unlearn what you have learned.

Luke: All right, Ill give it a try.

Yoda: No. Try not. Do… or do not. There is no try.

「Do… or do not. There is no try.」含義深遠成為諺語, 最近偶然讀到一句很相似的話, 1954 年科學家 James Watson 和 George Gamow 為了集思廣益研究 DNA 的功能成立了一個科學家協會《The RNA Tie Club》, 邀請了 20 位科學家參加並分配研究項目, 這個協會的座右銘是一句格言:

「Do or die, or don’t try.」

科學研究為何牽扯到生死? 英語「Do or die」在日常生活的言語裡只是用來表示堅定的決心, 或是強調眼前事情的重要, 無關生死.「no try」和「don’t try」也許只是巧合, 也可能是《星際戰爭》電影編劇 George Lucas 由此得到靈感. 

順便談談兩個真正的「Do or die」, 18世紀蘇格蘭獨立戰爭時詩人 Robert Burns 有一首詩《Robert Bruce’s March to Bannockburn》 (電影《Braveheart》描述的是同一戰爭, 不同的戰役) 結尾是:

Let us Do-or-Die.

印度國父甘地在他有名的《Quit India Speech》裡也提到「Do or die」, 不過他反暴力, 雖然也是爭獨立應該是鞠躬盡瘁死而後已的意思.
